#WTF?! Joseph Fiennes Will Portray Michael Jackson Escaping 9/11 with Liz & Brando!?

Untitled-1

Diversity in Hollywood was just dealt another casting oddity. In 2001, one of the strangest road trips in history (allegedy) took place. Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando drove from New York to Ohio in an attempt to get home following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It’s being made into a movie starring –are you ready?– starring Joseph Fiennes as Michael! Stockard Channing will play Liz and Brian Cox is Brando.

Fiennes is Jackson

Channing (right) is Taylor

Channing (right) is Taylor

Cox (left) is Brando

Cox (left) is Brando

Details of the improbable trip emerged in 2011 in Vanity Fair. The story goes;

Jackson invited the pair to his concert at Madison Square Garden. Following the 9/11 attacks, when air travel to and from New York was cancelled, the trio rented a car and began their quest back to California. “They actually got as far as Ohio – all three of them, in a car they drove themselves,” claimed a former employee of Jackson. Brando apparently insisted on stopping off at various fast food restaurants en route.

But one of Taylor’s ex-assistants told VF that the actor stayed behind in New York, visiting Ground Zero and praying in a church.

After being originally announced in December, Fiennes has now described the script as “a challenge”, adding,

“It’s a fun, lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek road trip of what celebrity of that kind is like. But also it’s rather beautiful and poignant about their relationships.”

On the surface, casting a white actor as Michael Jackson isn’t much of a stretch, all Fiennes has to do is stay out of the sun for the look. But it seems there are scores of good African-American actors out there that would jump at the chance to play the King of Pop. Usher, are you pissed? (via The Guardian)

Kanye West Has Been Distracted From His Creative Process… And Then Got Shut Down by Amber Rose

If you’ve been on the Internet at all today, you probably already know the T about the Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa beef that basically broke Twitter this morning. Basically, Kanye revealed the new name for his upcoming album last night, Waves (which was formerly Swish). Then, in several tweets, Wiz accused Kanye of ripping off Max B, a rapper from Harlem who popularized the word “wavy” in his music.

This morning, though, it all went down when Kanye responded to Wiz on Twitter by unleashing some very Kanye-ish responses with a string of tweets, insulting his music and bringing up his relationship with Amber Rose, who happens to be Kanye’s ex. One of Kanye’s more brilliant moments during all this messiness was this proclamation:

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 2.01.28 PM

Of course, we all know that when Kanye’s genius is distracted, no one is happy. Amber also entered into the conversation and spilled some serious tea, honey.

(I don’t know about you but I completely die and get re-born every time Amber Rose refers to herself as MUVA.)

Amber

Soon after that, Kanye decided to find some peace again and take down his tweets.

The Internet, of course, exploded with the jokes regardless.

singularity of the soul

Queer director J.B Ghuman, Jr. just sent me his latest art video +Singularity =Of= The Soul- and it’s just as freaky and thrilling as you’d come to expect from one of his projects. I was maybe a bit late when I first saw his work in 2011 film Spork, and later in his music videos for Cazwell and Double Duchess…but, I’ve become a HUGE fan…and hope to NEVER meet him, because my expectations are far too high, and I wanna live in this cloud forever! Anyway, this new vid is more of a visual statement about empathy, and ‘how the positive and negative elements of life equate to the same thing and the key to life exists somewhere in the middle’. It’s preternatural in it’s frenetic presentation…but, as I continue my journey with Ghuman, I’m pretty sure that the inexplicable is totally acceptable. Check it out for yourself below, featuring bit images of Cazwell, Lady Tigra, and iRAWniQ.

“My single biggest wish for ‘+Singularity =Of= The Soul-‘ is that it inspires people to empathize for one another and themselves,” says Ghuman, Jr. from his home studio in Los Angeles. “Regardless of circumstances, whether related to faith, love, lies, even rape or murder, its important we consider all situations from individual perspectives.”

January 28: It’s Your Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Writer, Colette

colette

January 28, 1873 Colette:

“Do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm”.

She was Sidonie Gabrielle Claudine Colette Gauthier-Villars de Jouvanel Goudeket, but smartly went by the simple, Colette.

Colette put herself out to the world as an ingénue, an innocent young wife of the Paris belle époque, a scandalous lesbian, a risqué music-hall performer, a serious novelist of prodigious output, a theatre critic, a beautician, and a world-class seducer of both sexes.

Her writing is playful, teasing, and sexually suggestive. She is an elegant stylist, perceptive and shrewd.

Colette’s 50 novels and collections of short stories were popular with housewives, shop girls and intellectuals. Her writing emphasis was on womens’ obstacles in love and she lived as passionately as she wrote. Sex was front and center in her writing, embellished with a spicy style and sparkling dialogue. She wrote about love, licit and illicit.

When Colette was 6 years old, her politician father permitted her to try to match him, wine glass for wine glass, while he stumped local bars for votes. Her free-thinking mother taught her the importance of being a female, and she shocked the neighbors by refusing to wear mourning clothes when her husband died.

When Colette was 20 years old, she fell in love with the writer, Henri Gauthier-Villars, who took her from her village in Burgundy to Paris to be his wife. He was a popular writer of pulp novels under the pen-name Willy, and was famous around Paris as a cad.

He encouraged Colette to write down stories about her childhood. He liked what he read and after some suggestions, he sent them off to an editor under his own name. The resulting series of Claudine novels made Gauthier-Villars rich and famous. He would lock Colette in a room until she turned out more stories. He was a vile, ruthless man. When Colette became ill and nearly died during their first year of marriage, Gauthier-Villars simply began a long string of affairs. He forced Colette to acknowledge his mistresses and to entertain them in their home. After 13 years, Colette had enough and she divorced him.

She continued writing books, but under her own name, but she had less success and had to find other ways of making a living.

Colette became a music-hall dancer, giving her new material for books. She worked as a theatre critic, political writer, fashion critic and she wrote a cooking column. She published her first novel under her own name, Dialogues De Betes. It sold well and received good reviews. Colette began to explore the depths and direction of her sexual identity. With Chéri (1920), Colette wrote about a character entirely different from herself. She adapted Chéri for the stage and played the leading role herself.

Portraying sexual boundaries on stage offered Colette the perfect opportunity to explore her own feelings.  Performing as a dancer gave her the chance to meet new people in an exciting new venue while providing her an opportunity to earn a living, not easy for a divorced woman in late 19th century Paris.

“Solitude, freedom, my pleasant and painful work as mime and dancer, tired and happy muscles, and, by way of a change from all that, the new anxiety about earning my meals, my clothes, and my rent, such, all of a sudden, was my lot.  But with it too went a savage defiance, a disgust for the milieu where I had lived and suffered, a stupid fear of man, of men, and of women too.”

Colette’s career in the theatre gave her the freedom to act on her own vexing fantasies. Working as a performer on stage provided her with the opportunity to explore her voracious sexual appetite, and Colette did just that.

In a performance at the famed Moulin Rouge, Colette caused a near riot by miming sex acts on stage. She started having affairs with other women.  One of her lovers was Emperor Napoleon III’s niece, Mathilde De Morny.  Colette moved into De Morny’s château.  After a brief and unhappy marriage, de Morny became the Marquise de Belboeuf, although she was better known in Paris lesbian circles as “Monsieur Belboeuf”.

De Morny supported Colette with money and introduced her to the high society people. She also showed Colette the gay underground of drag queens, beautiful men and cross-dressing women.  Colette gave De Morny love, affection, and plenty of sex. She also gave De Mornay a role in her act at the Moulin Rouge, with Colette playing an Egyptian mummy who unwrapped her bandages and boldly made love to De Mornay who played the role of a male archaeologist. The act was banned by the censors.

Colette loved the publicity. It also set the pattern for the next decade, performing and writing, revealing her gayness.

In the 1930s, Colette was a success and widely regarded as the greatest writer in France.  She became the first woman admitted to the prestigious Goncourt Academy.

In 1935, Colette married again. Her new husband was a jewelry salesman who had lost his business during the Great Depression.  He was Jewish, and the anti-Semitic attitudes of the era made it difficult for him to find work.  Colette supported him financially and helped hide him during the Nazi occupation of Paris during WW II.

Throughout the war years, Colette continued writing.  She published her most famous novel, Gigi (1945) when she was 72 years old.  Three years later, the novel was adapted into a French film. In 1951 in was adapted for the stage by Anita Loos, and was produced on Broadway starring Audrey Hepburn, who was selected personally by Colette for the role. In 1958 it was remade as a musical film by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, directed by Vincente Minnelli, starring Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture. I am not a big fan of this film. The story of a child being groomed to be a prostitute makes me a bit uneasy and the score sounds like rejects from My Fair Lady. I much prefer the film version of Chéri (2009), a drama directed by Stephen Frears, and starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend.

Colette was a lifelong passionate lover of animals of all kinds, but especially cats. Felines figure in many of her stories and her novel Dialogue Des Betes is presented as conversation between a cat and a dog. It is sweet and insightful. Le Chatte (1932) is a curious story about a love triangle between a man, a woman and, obviously, a cat.

Sadly, Colette never saw the musical that is sort of her legacy.  She left this world in 1954.  She was given an official French State Funeral, highly unusual for a woman at that time. Thousands of fans attended the service.

Colette was never admitted to the Academie Francaise, because it is for men only.

Artist Asya Kozina fashioned these incredible head-toppers out of paper and her love for the period and the results are just simply stunning.

“Historical wigs always fascinated me, especially the Baroque era. This is art for art’s sake aesthetics for aesthetics, no practical sense. But they are beautiful. I made a series of wigs. Paper helps to highlight in this case the main form and not be obsessed unnecessary details.”

Wouldn’t this make a great RuPaul’s Drag Race challenge? Except that they’d need to everyone a week to complete them, so on second thought, let’s just appreciate these.

#BornThisDay: Carol Channing

channing

January 31, 1921Carol Channing:

“The first 80 years are the hardest.”

News last week of Gay Icon Bette Midler’s return to the Broadway Musical stage after 50 years created quite the buzz fans of the genre. The announcement that she would be playing Dolly Levi in a new production of Hello, Dolly! Even caused some Musical Theatre fans to faint, and the comment sections of posts on The Facebook were filled with opinions, both smart and cruel, about the casting.

It was one of my most favorite musicals as a gay youth. I had the Original Broadway Cast album of Hello, Dolly!, and I augmented my collection with Hello, Dolly! cast recordings featuring Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman, plus the Japanese and Finnish productions, along with the London cast featuring Mary Martin as Dolly Levi. But none of them was better than the original with Carol Channing.

Channing is a singing, dancing, acting force of nature, one of Broadway’s biggest stars, a true Gay Icon, but even with all her fabulous talents, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what is Channing’s appeal. Her face and voice are instantly recognizable, yet in her long career, she has worked in only five films, including the LSD themed comedy Skidoo (1968), often cited as one of the worst movie ever. Channing did make one good film, and she was rewarded with a nomination for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for her work in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). But, her true triumphs have always been on the Broadway stage.

Channing is a true original. She was never a bombshell, and she is rather demented without being risqué or grotesque. She’s a belter in the manner of Ethel Merman, but without being as brassy. She was often cast as a gold-digger even though is nothing seductive about her persona. I shouldn’t “get” her, but I do, although I am not quite sure her personality and appeal makes sense in the new Post-Gay world.

Channing’s contradictions made a little more sense when I read her engaging autobiography Just Lucky I Guess: A Memoir Of Sorts (2002). In the book Channing is candid about her messy break up with her husband of 41 years, Charles Lowe. Carol discloses that she and Lowe had only ever had sex “once or twice in our 41-year marriage & that was 41 years ago.” She stuck to her wedding vows the whole time and didn’t have a liaison with anyone else. What opportunities did she pass up? Can you imagine? Channing might have slept with JFK, Frank Sinatra or Warren Beatty.

Lowe had spent most of Channing’s hard earned money, and to make her tale even more bizarre, her husband was a big ol’ homo. A Gay Icon with a gay husband is shocking, but it isn’t as shocking as that 41 year dry spell. After 36 years, even The Husband and I manage to knock one out once a year on our anniversary.

Channing’s memoir also reveals that her grandfather was African-American. In 1937, when she was 16 years old and ready to leave for Bennington College, her mother told her that her father’s birth certificate had marked him as “colored,” because his mother was black.

Even with her resilient image, Channing has had her hardships. She triumphed on Broadway as fortune hunting Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949), but Hollywood cast Marilyn Monroe in the film version. Monroe saw the stage show over and over, borrowing Channing’s best bits. Channing really owned the role of Dolly Levi. She is the first and most famous star in the role. But director Gene Kelly thought casting her was too risky and gave the role to Barbra Streisand who was decades too young for the role (Streisand would be perfect now) for the much anticipated film version.

I love her so much in Thoroughly Modern Millie, playing wealthy, madcap matron Muzzy Van Hossmere, who makes her entrance flying in a biplane, quaffing champagne. She blew my little 13 year old gay mind with her two big musical numbers Jazz Baby, where she tap dances on a xylophone, and Do It Again which begins with Channing being shot out from a cannon. Channing taught me about Camp. I saw her live only once, in a tawdry mess of a musical Lorelei (1974), a sort of sequel to Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. The show was a stinker and Channing managed to still wow with her crack comic timing and considerable star wattage.

Channing played Dolly Levi over 5,000 times to packed houses around the globe without ever missing a performance. I feel sorry for her understudies. On tour with Hello, Dolly! in the 1960s, Channing never missed a performance even while undergoing chemotherapy for uterine cancer. I did 28 performances of Hello, Dolly! at Seattle Civic Light Opera in 1989, playing Horace Vandergelder, not Dolly. I’m also noted for never missing a performance.

President Nixon’s infamous Enemies List included journalists, labor leaders, antiwar activists and civil rights activists; also listed were actors Paul Newman, Barbra Streisand and Channing.

The first Super Bowl Games in the 1960s only featured college marching bands for the half-time show. Channing was the first celebrity to entertain when she sang When the Saints Go Marching In at Super Bowl IV in 1970. Thankfully, without a wardrobe malfunction.

In May 2003, Channing married her fourth husband, Harry Kullijian. He was Channing’s junior high school sweetheart, who reunited with her after she mentioned him fondly in that memoir. They had nearly a decade together before Kullijian left this world at the end of 2011.The school’s auditorium was renamed The Carol Channing Theatre in her honor. The city of San Francisco proclaimed a Carol Channing Day, for her advocacy of Gay Rights and she has regularly acted as the host of the Gay Pride events around the country.

Channing:

“The gay community is responsible for so much of my success, and I love them. It’s a mutual love affair, really. They make the better audiences too, because they laugh often and loudly. Applause is obligatory, but laughter is a reward, and gay audiences reward me often. Years ago, I was made their Queen in San Francisco, which is so much better than legend or icon. I was told that on that day, there wasn’t a blonde wig to be found in stores. Isn’t that wonderful? I don’t like to think of myself as a gay icon. The moment you do, then you’re not. There are so many talented people that have been called a ‘gay icon’ that have no similarities at all.”

I recommend the excellent HBO documentary Carol Channing: Larger Than Life. Channing continues to perform in her 95th year. I have friends that know her and have let me know that she is a total sweetheart. Do not confuse her with Channing Tatum.

#Gay4Pay?: TitanMen Offers Disgraced (& Ripped) Ex-Congressman Aaron Schock $1 Million To Do Gay Porn

Titan Men announced it will pay off the HUGE legal debt (up to $1 million) for former U.S. Congressman Aaron Schock if the rock-hard bodied Republican will agree to an exclusive contract to star in a series of hardcore gay porn films. According to Politico, Schock – dubbed the “Downton Abbey Congressman” for his choice of office décor – is under government investigation for shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars, for allegedly misappropriating both campaign and government money.

The ripped 34-year-old became a media sensation, thanks to his Instagram. Schock is a compact 5’8″, and 165 pounds of lean muscle. His six-pack earned him a cover story in Men’s Health, where he revealed his workout regime: 60 – 75 minutes of strength training followed by a five-mile run at 6:30AM.

Titan has made a politcal porn parody, Cauke for President, that features a hot, homophobic senator named Mike Cauke, who has a secret hookup that sets off a chain reaction of political intrigue and… of course, sex. Sounds familiar.

TitanMen Vice-President Keith Webb says,

“Despite Schock’s scandal over allegedly misappropriating campaign funds, he has so much more to offer our fans. What we’re offering is a win-win situation, giving him the opportunity to break free and come out in a whole new world!”

Yes, I think this similar to offer Britney $100 million to do porn. Great press, plus there’s no way in hell you’re going to have to ever write that check. But with Trump leading in the polls, I guess in American politics and the media today, you can never say never.

Of course, the funniest presenters at last night’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards were Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. While presenting Carol Burnett with her life achievement, the duo poked fun at Leonardo diCaprio‘s method acting in The Revenant. Poehler joked,

“Let’s all calm down about Leonardo diCaprio and how hard it was to shoot The Revenant, okay? So you slept in a horse, and you ate bison liver, big whoop.

Carol [Burnett] would have slept in that horse, worn it, done a song and a dance and made a much funnier face after eating something very disgusting.”

DiCaprio, who DID eat raw bison liver for the film, didn’t seem THAT impressed, offering only a slight smile. Other great lines from the evenings festivities…

“God, I was hoping I wouldn’t need these, I’m sorry, it’s embarrassing.”
Sarah Silverman, breaking out her fake mustache and glasses to present

“I can still remember the first time I got nominated for a SAG award. I was only 9 years old, and I was competing against Batman.”
– 9 year-old Jacob Tremblay, reminiscing on the last 30 minutes

“To my parents. Thank you for listening to an overly ambitious, slightly annoying 13-year-old kid who wanted to go on auditions everyday after school…”
Leonardo DiCaprio, accepting the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role

“Don’t over think it, the drinks are free.”

Brie Larson - World of WonderPhoto by Jake Thompson

I (cried) finally watched Room and (was reduced to tears) I’m obsessed with Brie Larson. Here’s my five reasons the Oscar hopeful is our favorite.

8) She’s a BIG Star Wars fan. Proof:

7) She is obsessed with the Criteron CollectionA Woman Is A Woman is one of her favorites which makes her already-cool-factor instantly cooler.

6) This Yoga move seems effortless for her:

5) Yes, she was in Trainwreck, but I still have a soft spot for her in United States of Tara:

4) THIS dress:

3) THIS press junket:

2) Her ability to never give up but reminding us it’s OK to question everything:

1) Her sincere honesty even on a podium makes us adore her every single time she opens her mouth:

Go and support her film Room in theaters nationwide!

Built in 1864, The Dakota is one of THE most iconic residences in New York City. It was reportedly called “The Dakota” because at the time, it was so far north of the center of the city, it was as far way as the Dakotas. The building is square, built around a central courtyard ad the arched main entrance is a porte-cochère large enough for the horse-drawn carriages that once entered and allowed passengers to disembark sheltered from the weather. Rosemary’s Baby was famously set here (it was called The Bramford in the movie) and not surprisingly, the building has been home to many celebrities over the decades, including Lauren Bacall, composer Leonard Bernstein, George Clooney‘s aunt singer Rosemary Clooney, actress Lillian Gish, Boris Karloff, documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles, dancer Rudolph Nureyev, Joe Namath, Jack Palance, Maury Povich & Connie Chung, Gilda Radner, Rex Reed, John Lennon and Yoko Ono and Judy Garland. Garland’s former apartment is on the market and was renovated by designer Sasha Bikoff. The decoration might not be everyone’s taste, but the proportions of the rooms in the expansive nine-room apartment feature 13-foot ceilings that seamlessly flow from one to the other. The general layout of the apartments in the building is in the French style of the period, with all major rooms not only connected to each other, in enfilade, but also accessible from a hall or corridor, an arrangement that allows a natural migration for guests from one room to another and is especially nice for entertaining. The principal rooms, such as parlors or the master bedroom, face the street, while the dining room, kitchen, and other auxiliary rooms are oriented toward the courtyard. Some of the drawing rooms are 49 feet long. The living room in Garland’s apartment has French doors leading to a formal dining room overlooking the courtyard, a large eat-in kitchen, a library, and seven wood-burning fireplaces. There are three bedrooms two and a half baths over 4,700 square feet and can be yours for a cool $16.75 million. If only.
