After Carrie Fisher came across journals she kept during her three-month affair with Harrison Ford while shooting the original Star Wars in ’76, she figured the time for secrecy was over. Fisher told People magazine about their whirlwind romance in an excerpt from her new book, The Princess Diarist,
“It’s been 40 years! I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.
I would never want to embarrass him. I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind.”
Fisher was 19 at the time and Ford was a 33-year-old married father of two. Fisher did give the actor (who didn’t respond to People’s request for comment) a friendly heads-up sent him a draft — but she doesn’t know if he’s ever read it.
“Harrison’s very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time. How much longer could I wait?”
I’ve read all of Fisher’s books, like Surrender the Pink, and the hilarious Wishful Drinking which became a Broadway (which I saw) and was filmed by Wow’s Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato for HBO. If you haven’t seen it, do.
