Rhys Ernst and Zackary Drucker are a couple. And from 2008 to 2014, they were both transitioning genders — Ernst from female to male, and Drucker from male to female. The two both documented the course of their relationship and the transitioning process by shooting each other in various stages of their relationship. The Whitney Museum‘s Biennial in 2014 featured 46 of their photographs, in addition to a collaborative film called She Gone Rogue and a performance piece by drag performer Flawless Sabrina.

The new book Relationship is out this week with a larger selection of the hundreds of photos from the everyday to the cinematic.

In the foreword to the book, Stuart Comer wrote,

“The photographs are exquisite, surprising, and efficient in dissolving so many of the structures of fear that still allow gender to be policed so stringently. The images are printed alongside the ephemera of their relationship: ticket stubs to a Le Tigre concert they both attended before they met, notes that read, ‘Welcome home’ and, ‘I love you soooo much.’ In this context, the pictures break down those barriers, but they also insert an uncommon gender experience into the most personal of human interactions ―making Relationship a startlingly intimate and important document.”

Just this glimpse, makes you want to see more, doesn’t it? You can get Relationship here.

Anna Wintour Smiles!

Screen Shot 2016-06-22 at 9.43.15 AM

I can’t stop looking at these pictures! Vogue‘s famously sang froid editrix looks positively giddy during her talk with Burberry Chief Creative and CEO, Christopher Bailey, at Cannes Lions in France, yesterday. Wearing a lovely embroidered dress (it’s all the rage you know), her trademark three strands of colored gems, and – SURPRISE! – no glasses, Anna spoke to over 15,000 delegates at the annual advertising festival.

Via Luxury Daily:

Ms. Wintour opened by saying, “ I want to share four lessons that have helped to guide us. Today, audiences are distracted with everything that is going on. I want to make the case for grand ideas.”

The ideas were clearly spelled:

1. Aim higher: Push the limits and keep very high standards
2. Dare to be different: Believe in your creative vision and ideas
3. Focus on all of your goals: Aim high and stay focused
4. Make interesting friend: Expose yourself broadly to a wide circle of people

“The market always wants a little more,” Ms. Wintour said. “Many of our titles have shot for the moon.”

The editor referred to the article in The New Yorker that focused on very popular religion of Scientology, which had a huge impact in the marketplace. It was one of the most intensely read articles in the magazine’s history.

The New Yorker article became a book and then an HBO movie. It all started with the quality of the journalism.

Ms. Wintour spoke of the great care taken to tell the story of Caitlyn Jenner, formerly the athlete Bruce Jenner. Her team took the job of telling Caitlyn’s story seriously, carefully selecting an award-winning journalist and photographer to provide the right sensibilities for the story.

Indeed, Ms. Wintour appreciates authenticity, hard work and original thinking both in fashion and journalism. She spoke of the play Hamilton as “single handedly revolutionized Broadway. Broadway is not only for old rich people, it is for young rich people as well.”

MS. WINTOUR’S long and productive career showed her love of comedians and humor. She showed her humorous side sharing a video taken with comedian Amy Schumer in which they switched roles. Ms. Wintour showed great humor and timing in the video as a stand-up comic.

Of course, Miss Wintours is famous for having a very sly sense of humor, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen her smile… It’s just nice to see her looking so happy.

Barbara st

July 16, 1907Barbara Stanwyck:

“A star is only as good as her last picture.”

When queried about my favorite male and female stars of Hollywood’s First Golden Age, I have no hesitation in announcing Barbara Stanwyck as my female choice (with apologies to Irene Dunn and Myrna Loy).

Stanwyck, born Ruby Catherine Stevens in Brooklyn, possessed an unusual beauty and a distinctive husky voice. She was an extremely versatile actor, moving easily between Melodramas, Thrillers, Westerns, and Screwball Comedies. The buzz in the industry has always been that she was wonderful to work with, professional, fun on the set, noted for being especially kind to the crew and the extras, and she never behaved like the big star that she was.

Stanwyck had a career that lasted six decades, with over 100 films, bringing film fans a strong, realistic screen presence. She was a favorite of directors Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang and Frank Capra. After a short but notable career as a stage actor in the late 1920s, she made 93 films before smartly turning to television with The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1961), The Big Valley (1966) and The Thorn Birds (1983), where she made-out with the very gay Richard Chamberlain.

As an actor Stanwyck could be, by turns, salty or sweet; vulnerable or tough; funny or tragic; but always totally unique annd uncommonly intelligent. She brought madcap comedic glamour to The Lady Eve (1941), played a tough-minded feminist in the weepy Stella Dallas (1937), and a dangerous femme fatale in film noir classic Double Indemnity (1944). She could even sing and dance, appearing on stage in 1922 and 1923 versions of The Ziegfeld Follies.

I appreciated so many of her films, but one is special to me, certainly in my Top 10 Of All Time, Ball Of Fire (1941), with my male choice for Best Male Actor of the First Golden Age, Gary Cooper. I am also fond of her husband killer, Phyllis Dietrichson, in Double Indemnity; her mgazine columnist caught up in a series of white lies in the holiday romantic comedy Christmas In Connecticut (1945); and the her terrorized wife in Sorry, Wrong Number (1948).

An orphan at 4 years old, she never went to high school. She began performing out of necessity when she was 14 years old. Stanwyck invested her money smartly, eventually becoming one of the richest women in the USA.

“I knew that after 14 I’d have to earn my own living, but I was willing to do that… I’ve always been a little sorry for pampered people, and of course, they’re ‘very’ sorry for me.”

“I’ve known women who plodded through life, but the women I knew did their plodding on the pavement, not the soil. I know very little about the simple life. I’m a product of crowded places and jammed-up emotions, where right and wrong weren’t always clearly defined and life wasn’t always sweet, but it was life.”

Stanwyck married twice. The first time was to Broadway star Frank Fay who starred opposite her in the immensely successful play Burlesque (1927). Their marriage was rough. When he moved to Hollywood with Stanwyck, Fay, a vaudevillian, was unable to parlay his success on Broadway to the screen, while Stanwyck’s stardom was predestined. Fay was easily enraged and struck his young wife when he was drunk. Director William Wellman and writers Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell used their relationship for the basis for their screenplay of A Star Is Born (1937).

Stanwyck’s second marriage was to stunning leading man Robert Taylor. After appearing together in His Brother’s Wife (1936), Taylor and Stanwyck set up household together without the benefit of matrimony. An outraged Louis B. Mayer insisted on a wedding and put together a ceremony for the pair of popular stars in 1939. Their large ranch with horses and a rustic home on Mandeville Canyon Road in LA’s Brentwood section is still referred to as The Robert Taylor Ranch.

In 1950, when the Taylors divorced, the rumors swirled, especially because both actors were known for having affairs with people of the same sex. Although she rebuffed all questions about her sexuality or her marriages, most of Hollywood believed that neither Stanwyck nor either of her husbands was straight. It seems that she did have an affair with actor Robert Wagner, when he was just 22 years old and Stanwyck was 45, so I suppose the bisexual label works best for her. Wagner writes very fondly of their time together in his memoir Piece Of My Heart (2008).

In my research, I don’t find many girls named as Stanwyck’s female lovers. She seems to have been both discreet and well-loved by those in an industry where discretion and affection are hard to come by. There were the usual suspects including Joan Crawford and Tallulah Bankhead, not all that impressive, after all, they both fucked me.

Wildly popular among her peers and with audiences, Stanwyck continued working into the early 1980s, but when she retired she became a recluse. A smoker since she was 9 years old, pulmonary disease got her in early 1990. There was no funeral, according to her wishes. Her ashes were scattered over Lone Pine, California, where her popular television series The Big Valley and many of her Western films were made.

“Career is too pompous a word. It was a job, and I have always felt privileged to be paid well for what I love doing.”

If you want to know more about Barbara Stanwyck, and you really should, try Steel-True (2013) the massive, but engrossing, two volume bio by Victoria Wilson.

Marilyn Monroe came to New York in 1956 to study acting with Lee Strasberg, after a very short marriage to baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio ended in 1954. In the serious world of New York actors, Monroe fell into the orbit of playwright Arthur Miller, who she married on June 29, 1956. Living in city, the couple rented a simple farmhouse in Amagansett for the 1957-58 summer seasons. During that blissful newlywed time, she called herself MMM for Marilyn Monroe Miller. When she ordered cosmetics over the phone at she’d call herself “Mrs. Miller” and she was often seen driving around town in her black ’56 Thunderbird convertible with their Bassett Hound, Hugo. Marilyn is documented here in these rare photographs shot by Sam Shaw in the summer of ’57. Shaw took more than 900 photos of Marilyn that hot July, nearly 60 years ago.

Fran Lebowitz on the Unfair Advantages of Being White

$

vanityfair_fran-lebowitz-knows-what-to-do-with-all-those-empty-oligarch-apartmentsAuthor Fran Lebowitz on race in America.

The way to approach it, I think, is not to ask,

‘What would it be like to be black?’

… but to seriously consider what it is like to be white. That’s something white people almost never think about. And what it is like to be white is not to say,

‘We have to level the playing field,’

but to acknowledge that not only do white people own the playing field but they have so designated this plot of land as a playing field to begin with. White people are the playing field. The advantage of being white is so extreme, so overwhelming, so immense, that to use the word ‘advantage’ at all is misleading since it implies a kind of parity that simply does not exist.

It is now common —and I use the word ‘common’ in its every sense— to see interviews with up-and-coming young movie stars whose parents or even grandparents were themselves movie stars. And when the interviewer asks,

‘Did you find it an advantage to be the child of a major motion-picture star?’

the answer is invariably,

‘Well, it gets you in the door, but after that you’ve got to perform, you’re on your own.’

This is ludicrous. Getting in the door is pretty much the entire game, especially in movie acting, which is, after all, hardly a profession notable for its rigor. That’s how advantageous it is to be white. It’s as though all white people were the children of movie stars. Everyone gets in the door and then all you have to do is perform at this relatively minimal level.

Additionally, children of movie stars, like white people, have at—or actually in—their fingertips an advantage that is genetic. Because they are literally the progeny of movie stars they look specifically like the movie stars who have preceded them, their parents; they don’t have to convince us that they can be movie stars. We take them instantly at face value. Full face value. They look like their parents, whom we already know to be movie stars. White people look like their parents, whom we already know to be in charge. This is what white people look like—other white people. The owners. The people in charge. That’s the advantage of being white. And that’s the game. So by the time the white person sees the black person standing next to him at what he thinks is the starting line, the black person should be exhausted from his long and arduous trek to the beginning.“

tk-phaidon-andy-warhol-animal-portraits-900x450-2.png9698_lg Andy Warhol loved animals. So, it’s no big surprise that his feline friends and other domesticated animals were made into portrait subjects, some like his own beloved dachshund, Archie, others belonged to friends or were private commissions. He was a cat person early on, producing 2 limited-edition print books; 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy and Holy Cats by Andy Warhol’s Mother. After his death in the late 80s, I worked on the 2-volume, slipcased facsimile reproduction of those early books (left) with my pal, book designer, Yolanda Cuomo. Andy’s mother did the lettering for both books and since we needed to create the skip case with new text, I enlisted artist and Wowlebrity, Stephen Tashjian to recreate his mother’s script. It’s hard to tell the difference.

Abbott, self portrait

July 17, 1898Berenice Abbott:

“Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past.”

I have a passion for Photography, whether it is formal portraiture, commercial work, art photography, or just found snapshots. I have a sizable and thought provoking collection of vintage photographs of men being affectionate together which I like to share with readers.

My passion for photography along with my keen interest in architecture brings me to today’s #BornThisDay honoree, Berenice Abbott. She is a celebrated photographer of NYC architecture. She shot using a Century Universal Camera which produced 8 x 10 inch negatives. This large scale formatted camera was the instrument that allowed Abbott to photograph NYC with diligence and an attention to detail. Her work has provided an historical chronicle of many of the now destroyed buildings, entire blocks and neighborhoods of Manhattan.

During the Great Depression, Abbott was hired by the Federal Arts Project (FAP) as a project supervisor for the Changing New York project. She took photographs all around the city, but she had assistants to help her both in the field and in the office. This arrangement allowed Abbott to devote all of her time to producing, printing, and exhibiting the photographs. By the time she resigned from FAP in 1939, she had produced 305 photographs that were added to the permanent collection at the Museum Of The City Of New York.

BereniceAbbott_Pike and Henry Street_1936

When she first arrived in NYC, Abbott shared a Greenwich Village apartment with lesbian writer Djuna Barnes, philosopher Kenneth Burke and literary critic Malcolm Cowley. Abbott introduced Barnes to sculptor Thelma Wood, who became Barnes’ lover. Later Barnes wrote:

“I gave Berenice the extra ‘e’ in her name and she gave me Thelma. I don’t know who made out better.”

She tried for a career in journalism, but soon became more interested in Theater and Art, inspired by her pals playwright Eugene O’Neill and artist Man Ray. Abbott first became interested in photography in 1923, when Man Ray, looking for somebody who had no interesting ideas about photography and would do just as he instructed, hired her as his darkroom assistant at his portrait studio in the Montparnasse neighborhood of Paris. She hung out with Sylvia Beach, the lesbian owner of the Shakespeare And Company bookstore. She partied with writer James Joyce and artist/filmmaker Jean Cocteau. She frequented the gay bars of Paris with a circle of younger expatriate lesbian writers: Margaret Anderson, Gertrude Stein, and Janet Flanner. Abbott was absolutely fascinated by the Parisian gay world. She fell in love with the model Tylia Perlmutter and within months she became a chronicler of an unforgettable era of the cultural history of the city.

Man Ray was impressed by how fast Abbott learned her way around the darkroom and photographic techniques. He allowed her to use his studio when he wasn’t there to work on her own photographs.

Abbott:

“I took to photography like a duck to water. I never wanted to do anything else.”

She produced straightforward, detailed, powerful images of such 20th century celebrities as James Joyce, André Gide, and Peggy Guggenheim, and the photographs made her famous.

In Paris, she discovered the man now regarded as probably the finest photographer of all time: Eugène Atget. Abbott rescued him from obscurity, helped popularize his work, and preserved his negatives and prints after he died in 1927.

In 1935, Abbott fell in love with the art critic Elizabeth McCausland. She moved into McCausland’s Greenwich Village flat. They remained a couple for 30+ years, until McCausland’s passing in 1965.

In the early 1960s, the two women traveled US Highway 1 from Florida to Maine. Abbott shot pictures of small town and automobile related architecture. This project resulted in more than 2,500 photographs. The project brought an important record of a way of life now mostly erased. McCausland contributed the captions for the books: Changing New York (1939) and Greenwich Village Today And Yesterday (1949).

abbott-3

Not only was Abbott a world-class, distinctive photographer, but was also an inventor and innovator. She developed the “distortion easel”, which created unusual effects on images developed in a darkroom, and she came up with the telescopic lighting pole, known today by photographers as an “autopole,” to which lights can be attached at any level. Both devices are still widely used today.

Shortly after McCausland left this world, Abbott underwent lung surgery. She was told by her doctors that she had to leave NYC because of the air pollution. She purchased a rundown house in rural Maine and she lived there until she made her exit from this incarnation in 1991.

Abbott had continued to produce photographs after the move to Maine. Her last book, A Portrait Of Maine, published in 1968, was a bestseller. Her books continue to be published.

Abbott’s photography was straight, even if she wasn’t. I admire her unadorned, unmanipulated style. Always with a camera, she always put her art before her personal life. She never acknowledged her relationship with McCausland in interviews or in her own writing. She left an important history of a fascinating era, done in her a distinctive American style. Abbott seems to me to have been a real feminist hero also, stating:

“The world doesn’t like independent women, why, I don’t know, but I don’t care.”

Abbott had a long life filled with creative endeavors of the highest achievements, making a living from her work. She remained true to her art. Her philosophy was simple, like her pictures:

“Photography can never grow up if it imitates some other medium. It has to walk alone; it has to be itself.”

Like her photography, she often walked alone, but at the end of that walk, her life was a triumph.

UPDATE: CNN is reporting

One suspect is dead, and two others may be at large in the Baton Rouge shooting, the East Baton Rouge sheriff’s office said.

• Six law enforcement officers were shot — three are dead and three others are injured, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola told CNN.

• No motive has been identified at this time.

• Police are looking for anyone wearing army fatigues, all black or possibly a mask

Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, told CNN that the number of officers killed may be as high as three and that the victims may include officers and sheriff’s deputies.

There is still an active scene. They are investigating. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.

Police said that the shooting occurred one mile from police headquarters and that the scene has been “contained,” according to AP. This is a developing story.

#PictureThis: Spencer Tunick Photographed 100 Naked Women Outside the GOP Convention Today

nakedtunFeminists, activists, nudists, exhibitionists, and Cleveland-based Democrats (and Republicans too, maybe) posed for photographer Spencer Tunick today, and here’s the result!

It happened outside the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio and this particular shoot is titled Everything She Says Means Everything, is 100 naked women held up large mirror discs.

By holding mirrors, we hope to suggest that women are a reflection and embodiment of nature, the sun, the sky and the land. The mirrors communicate that we are a reflection of ourselves, each other, and of, the world that surrounds us. The woman becomes the future and the future becomes the woman.

In an interview with the Cleveland Scene, Tunick explained the project’s relationship to the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s gross comments about women.

The work is for my daughters, for their future, for them not to grow up in a society with hate, for them to grow up in a world with less violence toward women and more opportunities for them.

He says that work isn’t particularly political, but one party’s candidate has trashed women and the other is putting up the first female candidate for POTUS, so… you connect the dots. You can follow Spencer on Twitter here.

#OnThisFascistDay- American Nazis Throw A Party

$

1939

July 17, 1939–  American Nazis and Fascists had their convention at Madison Square Garden in support of Adolf Hitler. The building was covered in symbols of the Third Reich and the stage featured a giant picture of George Washington, “The Original American Nazi!”

The event was for the Bund Party, and it wasn’t a fun party. It was established by the viciously racist American Fritz Julius Kuhn. The Bund Party was to be Hitler’s “Fifth Column” and they urged USA politicians not to intervene in the war in Europe. Officials later claimed they had instructed organizers not to cover the arena in Swastikas, but apparently the Nazis didn’t get that memo. A uuuge banner was hung from the rafters that read “Stop Jewish Domination Of Christians.”

Kuhn was a former German WWI veteran who came to the USA and brought along his strong hatred of Jews and Blacks. He settled in Detroit and worked at a hospital owned by Henry Ford. The hospital Kuhn worked for, the Henry Ford Hospital, had a policy against hiring Jewish and Black doctors or admitting Jews and Negros as patients. Can you imagine? NO JEWISH DOCTORS?

Kuhn joined the Friends Of New Germany, an American Pro-Hitler organization with direct ties to Germany’s Nazi party. When that organization came under scrutiny, the charming Kuhn created the American Bund Party and appointed himself: Bund Führer.

The group began to stage Pro-Hitler rallies around the country, culminating in this 22,000+ person event at Madison Square Garden, under police guard while demonstrators protested outside.

There is a reason why Washington picture was featured and not the other Founding Fathers, was because Fascism, as an ideology, emphasizes action over intellectualism. This is why Hitler’s ideal Aryan was a strong, handsome, and physically fit person rather than someone with a brain for civics.

Kuhn repeatedly referred to President Franklin D Roosevelt as “Frank D. Rosenfeld”, calling his New Deal the “Jew Deal” and denounced America’s leadership. Most shocking to American sensibilities was the outbreak of violence between protesters and Bund storm troopers.

We can all be thankful that this movement died when the USA entered WW II in 1941, and that any sort of Fascism would be an impossibility in today’s rational America.

Meghan Trainor Says, “I’ve Never Voted & I Don’t Have Any Desire To”

Things-to-do-Header
Grammy winning singer and songwriter, Meghan Trainor said in a recent interview with Billboard, when pressed about who she is voting for in the upcoming election, said this,

“I should be way more aware, and if it was [Clinton] or Trump, I’d definitely vote for her. But I’ve never voted and I don’t have any desire to.”

Those ARE the choices, dear. And then she follows this DUH statement by saying,

I think it’s ridiculous that random crazy people can buy guns.

Ain’t it though. Gee, how could we change that? And with nearly 8 million followers on social media one would assume many impressionable 18 and 19-year-olds, one with that kind of reach CAN make a difference. Saying you don’t plan to vote, doesn’t help. You’re only 22 but you’d better wise-up fast.

July 18th: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Gay Porn Filmmaker, Fred Halsted

July 18, 1941Fred Halsted was the son of a construction worker and a farm laborer. Even though he grew up in Long Beach, not all that far from the movie studios in Los Angeles, the idea of becoming a filmmaker was probably not on his mind while he was a youth. He attended California State University, Los Angeles with a major in Biology. One of his professors there had a Bolex 16mm camera, the number one choice for experimental filmmakers, and Halsted asked him if he wanted to help make a porn flick. The professor found Halsted very hot and so a career was born. For financing, Halsted found work as a gardener, with singer Joey Heatherton and actor Vincent Price among his clients.

Halsted wanted to make sexually explicit experimental films and he wanted to be the star. With L.A. Plays Itself (1972), he succeeded. This was before video or digital. Halsted spent three years shooting film for L.A. Plays Itself. The idea of the fisting scene that made him famous, or should I say notorious, was the seed for the idea of L.A. Plays Itself, sort of like the way John Water’s scene with the lovely Divine eating dog poop gave birth to Pink Flamingos (1972). It was definitely the first gay porn flick to be screened like an art film. It was also the first to have a sex scene with no sex; simply shots of traffic with a voice-over of an experienced top man and the younger rube doing the deed. The film has an impressionistic style throughout, cutting between landscapes and bodies for poetic rather than narrative effect; the combinations of sound and image were striking.

After L.A. Plays Itself, Halsted spent years getting ready for what he hoped would be his greatest triumph, Sextool (1975). He talked it up during interviews, working up advance publicity for it, but when it was finally released the film fell flat. Porn films during this era actually played in theatres, and Sextool ran for just a single one week at the 55th Street Playhouse in NYC, where LA Plays Itself had played for a year, breaking records earlier in the decade.

Halstead kept making arty gay porn films, the final one, Breaker Blue (1988), was released a year before he died, but Sextool essentially ended his career as an independent filmmaker. He had been making his movies using 35mm, a choice that proved disastrous. The expensive 35mm film stock meant that he had to avoid shooting too many takes. He relied on the editing to get what he wanted and he constructed the films almost to the point of incoherence. He had hoped that the format would mean that his films would be shown at art houses, few of which had 16mm projectors. Legit theater bookers were wary of Sextool, which was more aggressive in its sexuality and aesthetics than LA Plays Itself. Only a few of porn theaters were equipped with 35mm projectors, so he couldn’t show Sextool on the porno circuit, leaving it with no real theatrical distribution. Interest in 1972’s straight porno films like Deep Throat and Behind The Green Door had climaxed. Halsted was unable, or unwilling, to understand how society had changed in the 1970s. By 1975, the mainstream interest in porn had shot the wad, and the production of adult films moved to video with little interest in an eccentric independent filmmaker like Halsted. But, his vision helped define the gay macho clone look of the 1970s.

Sextool is now what film archivists call “an orphan”, a movie with no studio, artist’s estate, or any rights-holder to see to its preservation. There is only one 35mm print of the film, It is held at MoMA in Manhattan, in fact, the only hardcore sex films in the Film Collection at MoMA are L.A. Plays Itself and Sextool.

Halsted was a manic depressive, and his medication took away his good-looks. He drank too much, and his behavior became self-destructive at the end of his life. After the death of the great love of his life and co-star Joey Yale in 1986, he went into a spiral of emotional and physical decline. He was also broke. Halsted ended his own life in 1989.

Unusual for a gay guy of my age, but I actually have little interest in porn. On the occasion that I see any, I become impossibly horny in the first three minutes and then I am bored beyond an erection. It’s just pink, pink, pink, in and out, in and out, in and out. But, I am going to be totally honest with you and admit, although I did see his films when they were originally released, I took another look at some clips from L.A. Plays Itself and Sextool to prepare for this #BornThisDay. You can find them on YouTube. Yet, you kids know I am very interested in our Gay History and Halsted’s films were released at a rarefied time in the history of X-rated Gay Cinema. Pornographic films had only been legal to screen publicly for a couple of years and both gay and straight versions had been looking to legitimize themselves through consciousness artistic techniques. Wakefield Poole‘s classic Boys In The Sand (1971) had led the way for gay adult films, and Deep Throat (1972) was an example of the short-lived “porno chic” era in straight porn that L.A. Plays Itself tried to capitalize on, although Halsted’s film was conceived of and in production well before any of them. Halsted hired a publicist for it, held VIP advance screenings for the critics, and had a remarkable success for such a low-budget, gritty gay porn film.

This story of L.A. Plays Itself would probably be a shock to people who get their pornography online, little of which has any pretenses of being art. It is now seen as a period piece, not a piece of ass on a computer screen. I am sorry I can’t include a clip, but even The Wow Report has limits.

#BiteMe: Apple Dumps Trump, Refusing Funding & Tech Support for GOP Convention

Apple has taken a YUUGE stance against Trump by not providing any money or technology to the Republican National Convention.

Unlike Facebook, Google and Microsoft, which have all said they will provide some support to the GOP event in Cleveland next month, Apple decided against donating technology or cash to the effort. Apple’s overtly political stance against Trump is a sign of the tensions between Silicon Valley and the GOP’s presumptive nominee.

I guess the move isn’t that unsurprising, given Trump’s Tweet about boycotting of all Apple products earlier this year over CEO Tim Cook’s refusal to develop software to unlock the iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino terrorists.

You’d think that giants like Google, Facebook, & Microsoft, which are all about protecting their brands, would not want their logos anywhere near Trump at the GOP convention, as he represents everything that the tech sector should be opposing.

But some corporations seem to be learning that associating their products with Trump in any way will tarnish their brands in the eyes of consumers. Other big brands reducing their commitment or opting out entirely this year:

Coca-Cola donated just $75,000 to the Republican convention this year, a steep drop from the $660,000 it gave to the party for its convention in Tampa four years ago.

Hewlett-Packard announced last month that it would not be contributing to the RNC this year, despite having a long-standing tradition of contributing to the party.

MetLife, one of the Tampa convention’s biggest sponsors, is not giving any money to the RNC this year either.

Wells Fargo, which gave $500,000 to each party’s convention in 2012, will only provide assistance to the Democrats’ convention this year.

However, despite these boycotts, a spokesperson for the RNC told said that they are still on track to meet their $64 million goal. But the main money that has been coming in has been underwritten almost exclusively with private cash from billionaires, corporate lobbyists and Super PACs. This is the direct result of a series of recent federal rule changes that eliminated public funding for conventions and made it MUCH easier for parties to rake in unlimited sums of private cash.

So, they don’t really need these corporate sponsors anymore, it seems.

Trump Lands D-Listers, Scott Baio & Antonio Sabato, Jr. To Speak at GOP Convention

tp.logo_Yes, as you’ve heard, the circus is in Cleveland this week but the Trump/ Pence ticket has apparently had a tough time getting any celebs to speak. Trump had promised an “all-star” gathering of “winners” the likes of which we’ve never seen, but who do they come up with? Mega-stars like Scott Baio and Antonio Sabato, Jr?

Yes, on Saturday night’s edition of the Fox News show Justice with Judge Jeanine, Baio announced that he’d been personally selected by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. It’s looking pretty opportunistic, on Baio’s part, that is. He was positively beaming over the amount of “interviews” he’s conducted since his endorsement.

It’s been fantastic, Judge. It started with you, and from that I’ve gotten so much time to talk about Donald Trump, a man that I believe in, and I’ve done I don’t know how many interviews, and radio, and print, and things like that. I was at a fundraiser for Mr. Trump the other night with my wife, and he invited me to speak at the convention –which was completely unexpected and out of left field. I mean, he had given a speech and he was walking out and I looked at him and I said, ‘Mr. Trump, Scott Baio…,’ and he said, ‘Oh my god!’ And he said to me, ‘Do you want to speak?’ and I said, ‘Here?’ and he goes, ‘No, no, at the convention!’ And I went, ‘Ugh… o…okay,’ and we went inside the house where the fundraiser was.

Baio says he’ll be speaking Monday night at around 8 o’clock, with all the confidence of an actor who just got a part that he has no idea who the character is,

I don’t know exactly what it is that I’m talkin’ about [at the convention].

Baio has in recent months taken to Twitter to feud with trolls on his desired POTUS’s behalf. He’s tweeted a meme calling Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton a “cunt,” and back in April earned himself some conservative talk-show hits when he tweeted out a photo of a Starbucks cup with the name “Trump” scrawled on it, claiming that the barista refused to call out the name on the cup—which apparently led to some sort of altercation, Baio V. Barista.

The addition of Baio means that Trump’s YUUGE “celebrity” speakers at the RNC will include not one but TWO former VH1 reality show hosts. (Baio starred in Scott Baio Is 45… and Single) Sabato is another big name that Trump talked into appearing. He was on the dating competition My Antonio, where a group of women vied for the heart of the ex-model. The General Hospital/ Melrose Place veteran told People,

It is refreshing to have a candidate like Trump who is so honest about his feelings because he speaks for many of us when he says we are in a bad place.

Refreshing as a facist breeze! But the list doesn’t stop there, no! The RNC also lined up Natalie Gulbis! Who is that you ask? She’s the 363rd-ranked female golfer in the world, who also appeared on the second season Celebrity Apprentice.

Baio seems to share Trump’s views towards women. In 2007, in an interview with Howard Stern, Baio bragged about his numerous female conquests and confessed that he’d slept with ‘less attractive’ women as a way of ‘giving back.’

Baio said during his recent FoxTV appearance,

I wish that people could meet Donald Trump. I really do. He’s such a regular guy, and every time I’ve been with him and talked with him, he’s a guy… he’s just a guy… who is very successful. And that’s one of the things I hope will connect with millions of Americans.
