LaSalvia is now supporting Hillary Clinton.

Trump International Hotel Washington, D.C Groundbreaking CeremonyChris Barron, the former national political director of the Log Cabin Republicans and co-founder of the now defunct GOProud, LOVES him some Trump.

Donald Trump is the most pro-gay Republican nominee ever.

Huh? With Trump’s opposition to same-sex marriage and his promise to appoint conservative Supreme Court justices that might seem hard to swallow. Barron had criticized Trump early in the primary season but has since come around. He says that the presumptive nominee’s “live-and-let-live” ethos and relative moderation on social issues would “free up” gay voters to look beyond topics like same-sex marriage…

This is an issue that we’ve won the day on…

But Barron says the LGBTQ community should “look at the totality of issues that impact them,” like jobs, the economy, foreign policy and terrorism.

Hillary Clinton is a lock to win the majority of gay voters, but there are more some misinformed souls that think Trump is the ticket.

Journalist Milo Yiannopoulos pointed to the candidate’s hardline immigration policy — a stance, Yiannopoulos said, that ultimately bolsters gay rights. Yiannopoulos told Policy Mic, Trump was a gay icon.

The man built a gold-plated tower with his name on it! Gay men have a deep, if sometimes brash, sense of the aesthetic, and Trump’s is hard to ignore. It’s flashy, it’s in-your-face, it’s fabulous.

Then there’s Trump himself. Raw, masculine energy. He’s just so much more exciting than normal presidential candidates with their drab expressions and teleprompter speeches.“

But Jimmy LaSalvia, who co-founded GOProud with Barron left the GOP in 2014, because of its persistent “tolerance of bigotry,” isn’t convinced. LaSalvia endorsed Clinton in December,

Gay people have been used as political pawns our entire lives. It’s personal to us and everyone who’s ever been marginalized for political gain.

A poll conducted by Whitman Insight Strategies last month found Trump winning just 16% of the LGBTQ vote to Clinton’s 84%.

Yiannopoulos still predicts,

He’ll definitely do better. While I doubt many progressive, Democrat-supporting gays will switch over, he’ll bring in a huge number who have never voted before in their lives. He’s just that compelling.

As they say, Good Luck with that.

Roseanne Endorses Trump: “We Would Be So Lucky” If He Won

Increasingly problematic comedian Roseanne Barr said today she is rooting for Donald Trump to win the general election over Hillary Clinton.

“I think we would be so lucky if Trump won,” she told The Hollywood Reporter“Because then it wouldn’t be Hilary.” Adding that the election system is “all fixed.”

“I think Hillary [Clinton] probably got the receipt, because she paid for the Oval Office,” she said. “And both Trump and Bernie are playing the heel for Hillary.”

She went on to slam Clinton, saying she’s friends with “everybody that gives her any goddamned money.”

“The fact is, you don’t get to be the nominee without taking a lot of dirty money,” she said.

“You might be the best fuckin’ person on earth, but if you’re hanging out with criminals who do bad things, that matters a lot.”

She then praised Trump for financing his own campaign.

“That’s the only way he could’ve gotten that nomination. Because nobody wants a president who isn’t from Yale and Harvard and in the club. ‘Cause it’s all about distribution,” she said.

“When you’re in the club, you’ve got people that you sell to. That’s how money changes hands, that’s how business works. If you’ve got friends there, they scratch your back and blah, blah.”

When asked if she thought Trump would act in people’s interest, she said:

“To me, he’s saying that the order of law matters. When a president can just pass laws all on his own, that is a little bit different than what America was supposed to be about. And Trump is saying people will have to be vetted, we’ll have to have legal immigration. It’s all a scam. I mean, illegal immigration. When people come here and they get a lot of benefits that our own veterans don’t get. What’s up with that?

Just going to leave this right here and back away slowly…

There’s a Super-Hot, Super-Gay Robin Hood Comic Out Called “Merry Men” That You Need to Be Reading

Ed-Luce-Merry-Men-Cover-600x899

This week, Oni Press came out with a gay rebooting of the classic Robin Hood story called Merry Men, and from my understanding, Robin is now a gay outlaw who steals from the rich and REALLY GIVES IT to the poor, *wink, wink*.

13th century England. Robert Godwinson, former lover of King Richard, lives with his band of Merry Men in Sherwood Forest, away from the watchful eye of Prince John, who has outlawed homosexuality. Though isolated, the men live in peace–that is, until a stranger approaches their camp asking for aid to a nearby town under siege by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robert–nicknamed Robin–is reluctant to help, but equally eager to get rid of this perplexing stranger… and to put his formidable bow-and-arrow to use. It’s Robin Hood like you’ve never seen him before, based on scholarly speculation about what’s really behind the outlaw’s legend.

The cover, above, featuring Little John getting a raaaaather graphic BJ in Sherwood Forest, is EVERYTHING. Worth framing.

MERRYMEN-1-COVER-RETAIL-600x922

Panels spoke to creators Robert Rodi and Jackie Lewis

How did Merry Men come to be and how has it evolved since its inception?

Robert Rodi: I’m a bit of a history buff, with a special love of English medieval history. And one day a few years ago I was ferreting around the various blogs and websites devoted to the subject when I came upon a discussion of whether Robin Hood was gay. Well… of course Robin Hood can’t actually have been gay, because Robin Hood wasn’t real. But there was some discussion, based on a few papers by a few academics, that possibly the origins of the Robin Hood story were rooted in sexual outlawry — that the historical figures who inspired the legend of Robin and his merry men, were people who were ejected from society and forced to live in nature because of their homosexual practices.

As a gay man I was of course very interested in this, and read as much as I could; and, well, it’s all about as persuasive as any other theory about the origins of Robin Hood, which is to say, about as persuasive as you want it to be. Given the lack of any hard evidence of any kind, everything about Robin is more or less conjectural.

“Whatever people think Robin Hood is, Robin Hood is.” That’s an awesome quote. Beyond his station a sexual outlaw, who is this version of Robin Hood to you?

Robert: Well, any version of Robin Hood has to be a man of the people … a man who stands up for the little guy against the monolithic authority that would otherwise crush him. But when we meet our version of Robin in our first issue, he’s not got there yet. He’s just a guy who’s been in the Crusades and returned home and tried to settle back down to his old life. And it’s a humble life, too; unlike the later Robin Hood legends, where he’s a nobleman named Robert Lockley, in our story he’s a lowly village burgher, Robert Godwinson. He’s an outsider: a Saxon in a Norman world. He just wants to live quietly and peacefully.

But that all goes to hell, and he finds himself in a refugee in Sherwood Forest, with a band of friends and lovers who look up to him and basically make him their leader by proxy — because he’s a man of the world, he’s seen the world, he’s been a soldier. He’s not entirely comfortable with being the guy who makes the decisions, but he recognizes he’s the obvious choice and so he goes along with it. But then as our story progresses, he gets pushed into being something even bigger — something almost mythic.

Jackie, how are you approaching your work on Merry Men? Can you share your specific priorities and inspirations?

JackieLewis: My main priority, when designing the characters that we’re more familiar with, was to break away from “classic” representations, but still pay homage to them. Take away Robin Hood’s pointy feathered hat, but leave the slightly-curled mustache. Little John has to be big and burly, but make him a bit more subtle. Basically, keep the characters in the realm of recognizability, but make them unique to this project.

I also did a TON of research. I now have so, so many books on the early medieval era. I start every new project by researching contemporary clothing, weapons, technology, really anything that will help me visually flesh out the world. I’ve even gotten supplies for and made medieval era-appropriate arrows, just to get a really good sense of how to draw them. I also watched a few different Robin Hood movies that I grew up on, not only to refresh what stands out to me, but also to make sure I avoid designing anything too close to past interpretations. What’s great is that I still love all of them for various reasons, and I want to bring that love to this project. I want readers to fall in love with the characters and Robert’s new take on the Robin Hood mythos.

Robert, you mention Robin’s band of friends and lovers. Who are these Merry Men, and do they all have roots in previous Robin Hood stories?

Robert: Most of my cast is drawn from previous Robin Hood stories: Little John, Much the Miller’s Son, Will Scarlet, Arthur-a-Bland, and Alan-a-Dale. Joining them are two all-new new characters. Kenneth Lester is an older man (and one of Robin’s ex-lovers); I wanted Robin to have someone wiser and more experienced on hand, that he could use as a sounding board. And then there’s Sabib al Hassan, a Saracen page Robin rescued in the Holy Land.

The two obvious absences from this list are Friar Tuck and Maid Marian. To explain that, I have to clarify how I approached the series. I wanted to clear away all the narrative and thematic layers that have accumulated over the centuries — to go back to first principles (the earliest Robin ballads, from the 14th century) and start over from there. I felt free to pick and choose from everything that came after. And I did not choose Maid Marian. Partly because she’s such a late addition to the legend; she doesn’t appear in any Robin Hood ballads until the 16th century. And she actually had her own folkloric tradition before that. It’s sort of like, if a couple hundred years from now, people only remembered Wonder Woman as Superman’s girlfriend. In a way, I’m just giving Marian back her freedom; she’s not stuck being somebody’s love interest anymore. And that’s the other reason I’m not using her: because she wouldn’t fit that role, anyway. In our series, Robin’s love interests are all male.

As for Friar Tuck … that’s a bit complicated. The first Robin Hood ballads were set in the fourteenth century, but later he got retconned to the early twelfth — which I vastly prefer, given the nice, juicy über-villain we then get in Prince John. But in the early twelfth century, there were no friars in England; the mendicant orders came much later. And I’m trying to keep this series as historically accurate as possible, to compensate for any liberties I might take for narrative purposes. I do have plans for Tuck, and you’ll get an pretty good idea of them before our first arc is finished; but he won’t be a friar, and might not be recognizable in some other respects, as well. 1b361d87-ba02-48f7-af84-d9956d79445c

The synopsis mentions homosexuality (through Prince John’s laws against it)—can readers also expect to see other shades of queer identity in Merry Men?

Robert: Yes, they can, Jon. Beginning right in issue #1.

Can you tease what readers can look forward to in the first several issues of Merry Men?

Robert: In our first story arc, you’re going to see the Sheriff of Nottingham’s campaign against “merry men” spread, and our band of heroes evolve from forest-dwelling refugees into a small guerrilla army. You’ll see love affairs tested—some survive, others may not. You’ll see new versions of classic Robin Hood villains, including Prince John, the Bishop of Hereford, and the depraved Guy of Gisbourne. You’ll see a flashback to the Crusades, with Robin and Richard the Lionheart as warrior-lovers in the Middle East, and you’ll witness the travails of an abandoned wife in 12th century England (there will be women in our cast; most definitely so). Above all, you’ll witness Robert Godwinson becoming Robin Hood—with lots of action and adventure along the way, and some reflection on the choices we make, and why we make them. And of course you’ll see lots of gorgeous artwork, gorgeously colored. Sounds like a deal to me.

Jackie: An excellent script that cleverly draws parallels between the world of Merry Men and current social/political issues. Great fight scenes, hard choices, and characters that you’ll get to know in a whole new way. Also, stone-cold hotties.

That was fast! Sounding thoroughly chastised for his outspoken comments in Vulture earlier today in which he sharply criticized Colton Haynes. Eric Stonestreet and Bryan Singer, Real O’Neals star Noah Galvin gave a carefully worded mea culpa on Twitter, explaining “I am new to this.”

The apology:

Methinks there was probably an emergency damage control meeting with lawyers, managers, agents, PR people, Real O’Neal’s bigwigs… and someone with a giant wooden paddle for his behind that convened twenty minutes after shit hit the web.

Let’s see how many other apologies he makes before this settles… Poor kid. That’s a hard lesson to learn. (via Twitter part 1 and part 2 and Towleroad)

#BornThisDay: Judy Garland

Title: GARLAND, JUDY ¥ Pers: GARLAND, JUDY ¥ Ref: XGA001AZ ¥ Credit: [ THE KOBAL COLLECTION ]

June 10th, 1922–  Francis Ethel Gumm:

“If I am a legend, then why am I so lonely?”

The “Judy Queen” was a certain kind of homosexual archetype from the mid-20th century, an era that brought the first baby steps towards Gay Rights, but it was also a time when gay behavior was coded and gay stereotypes allowed straight society a chance to deal. Judy Queens flocked to her films, told stories about her at brunch, memorized her albums, screamed and trembled at her concerts, and 40,000 of them showed up to weep at the viewing her body at NYC’s Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in June 1969.

Beginning in the mid-1970s, as gay people found their footing and began demanding to live an open life, the gay guys had to live down those stereotypes, many of us hitting the gym and butching it up. Now in the second decade of the 21st century, Gay, as we have known it, is on the way out. Getting married, buying a house and having children are the thing. The journey has taken gay people from Oz back to Kansas. Now, many gay people disown the notion of a Judy Queen as an embarrassment. The world is going Post-Gay.

How did this Judy Queen happen? Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Cher show strength, in their talent and with a kind of nonchalance about how society regards them. These women have demanded to be true to themselves. Garland, the generation before, lived her life with self-effacement, insecurity and pressed-down emotions. She was willing to be whatever the audience wanted her to be. Garland begged to be loved. Madonna says we are fortunate to get to love her.

How can I come up with a true gay connection to Judy Garland? Let’s see… her father was gay, two of her husbands were gay, the man she handpicked as a husband for her famous daughter was gay, her gay fans remain the most fervent fans even in 2016. The fruit of her loins is Liza Minnelli for heaven’s sake.  And then there is the matter of that little film titled The Wizard Of Oz (1939).

There are still enough of old queens around 47 years after her final bow to remember how important she was to us. Garland remains the very definition of Gay Icon for those of us of a certain age. Her troubled relationships with men, her self-doubt, her pain, and that battle with booze and pills, they all represent parts of life that we can identify with. Plus, her performances reflect a certain truth, bringing something meaningful to anyone that has wasted time hiding away their own emotions.

Garland’s influence is never all that far away from the dreaded, threatening “Gay Agenda”. The Stonewall Riots have been attributed to the outrage and heartache experienced by Garland’s funeral. Her A Star Is Born co-star, James Mason, gave the eulogy earlier that day, June 27, 1969. The Stonewall Riots is, of course, the name given to the events of early morning on June 28, 1969, when a group of gay and lesbian patrons of the Greenwich Village gay bar, The Stonewall Inn, resisted their routine arrest for being homos with a spontaneous and violent protest. We now refer to the two nights of rioting as just “Stonewall”. At the mafia operated Stonewall, patrons were required to sign in. The most common pseudonym used was “Judy Garland.” The events are widely and correctly understood to be the spark that ignited our modern Gay Rights movement, but the Garland connection is probably an urban myth. Who knows?

We do know that the term “Friend Of Dorothy” is a 20th century form of coded identification between gay people. The term was named for Garland’s most famous role, of course. The phrase dates back to at least WW II, when homosexuality was illegal in the USA. In L. Frank Baum’s Road To Oz (1909), one of sequels to the original Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, the character Polychrome meets Dorothy’s traveling companions, and exclaims: “You have some queer friends, Dorothy”. She replies:

“The queerness doesn’t matter, so long as they’re friends”.

Most important, Dorothy is accepting of those who are different, including The Cowardly Lion who is living a lie: “I’m afraid there’s no denyin’, I’m just a dandy lion…”

Garland’s concert at Carnegie Hall in 1961 is a Show Business landmark. Only two years earlier, she had been advised to retire from performing after being diagnosed with Hepatitis, but instead she took on a series of concerts in Europe and the USA that absolutely reestablished Garland’s reputation as The Greatest Entertainer Of All time. The Carnegie Hall concert is still regarded as the greatest evening in show biz history. The double album live recording of that concert, Judy Garland At Carnegie, spent more than a year on the Billboard charts and won seven Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year.

Garland had a 40+ year career. She made more than 50 films, at one point working on as many as four a year at MGM in the late 1930s-1940s. She was nominated for the Academy Award for her role in the remake of A Star Is Born (1954) and another nomination for Judgment At Nuremberg (1961). In 1940, she was presented with a special Oscar for her outstanding performance as a “screen juvenile” for The Wizard Of Oz and Babes In Arms. Garland won a Special Tony Award in 1952 for her contributions to the revival of Vaudeville with her record-breaking 19-week show at the Palace Theatre. In 1962, she won an Academy Award as the youngest-ever winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. She was just 39 years old. Her first film was in 1929 and her final movie was ironically titled I Could Go On Singing in 1963.

Garland was often unreliable, erratic, drunk or high, or too nervous to perform. She was fired from four big films. But, she was given those drugs by the studio doctor, and she was bullied by directors and studio heads, and she was exhausted from a grueling work schedule since early childhood.

Despite the fact she was diminutive (not quite 5 feet tall), there is real on-screen gravitas in that pint-sized package. Even though MGM thought the studio had to struggle to make her physical appearance marketable, the camera truly loved Garland. She possessed considerable charisma and had sex appeal to spare.

Her pal Frank Sinatra stated:

“Whenever Judy Garland sang, a little bit of her died.”

judy 3

On a June night six years ago, I stayed up late watching DVDs of her CBS television series from the early 1960s. I was entranced by her persona and yet horrified by her histrionics. Sometimes when listening to her recordings, I am put-off by the way that she sings every single song as if it were her last. Her over the top interpretations of the great standards push me away. But… then I hear the original, or even her late in life version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and I end up crying. Judy Garland loved to be loved and she loved her fans for loving her and they loved her right back. I love her for that.

“I could live without money, but I cannot live with love.”

Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more! ***** TNI Press Ltd does not hold or assert any Copyright or License in the attached image. It just keeps getting better and better! The official audio for “This Wheel’s On Fire” by the gayest icon of them all Kylie Minogue, for the gayest movie of all time Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Soundtrack is here. The movie is out July 1 in the UK and July 22 in the States. Take a listen to it below- it’s got a throbbing sort of bounciness that I really like.

The Sun reports that it was recorded in a “secret studio session,” as Ab Fab creator Jennifer Saunders wanted to “keep her involvement under wraps.”

“This Wheel’s On Fire” was originally written by Bob Dylan and The Band’s Rick Danko, but it was Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger who made it a psychedelic Top 5 hit in the UK in 1968. It’s that version that subsequently came to be used (in re-recorded form) in the AbFab opening credits throughout the early-to-mid ’90s.

Siouxsie and the Banshees, of course, also did a version that remains my personal fave.

wilder now

June 11, 1933Gene Wilder:

“Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple”

In 2014, I was in treatment for Stage 4 Cancer and I didn’t much feel like doing any of the things that I love most: reading, writing, walking, eating, drinking, masturbating, but I did watch hours and hours of programming via Turner Classic Movies, the default channel on my television set. I caught many films, some much loved and many that I had not seen in decades. While I was ill, I probably watched over 500 movies.

I had not seen Arthur Penn’s Bonnie And Clyde (1967) since its first run in theatres and I was surprised at what a great film it was. Its violence was shocking at the time with all that graphic killing, but I had not remembered that it was the beginning of Gene Wilder’s film career. His small, but memorable role, was so “out there” and original, how had this escaped my orbit, especially when Wilder has long been a favorite actor for me?

Wilder’s wild, wacky performances in films like Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971), and the double whammy of Blazing Saddles (1974) and Young Frankenstein (1974) make him a truly unforgettable Comedy Icon.

Wilder was born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee to a Jewish family. His father had emigrated from Russia. His mother was very ill from  from Rheumatic Fever, and her doctor warned little 8 year-old Wilder: “Don’t ever argue with your mother, you might kill her. Try to make her laugh.”

After high school, Wilder studied Theatre at the University of Iowa, with a year studying theater and fencing at the Old Vic in England. After serving in the US Army for two years, Wilder moved to NYC, where he took odd jobs, including working as a fencing teacher, to support himself while he studied acting and how to make his mother laugh. He studied at HB Studios, where I also took classes.

Wilder decided that he “couldn’t quite see a marquee reading ‘Jerome Silberman as Macbeth'” and he made up a stage name, Gene Wilder. He took his new first name from a character in a Thomas Wolfe novel, and his last name from the gay playwright Thornton Wilder.

Wilder found work in Off-Broadway and Broadway plays. In 1963, he appeared in Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage And Her Children starring Anne Bancroft, who introduced him to her cute boyfriend, Mel Brooks. Wilder and Brooks became besties. For years, Brooks had been tinkering with a bizarre and unconventional idea about doing a musical comedy of Adolf Hitler, and he wanted to cast Wilder in what would become The Producers, his first screenplay.

Wilder got that role in The Producers (1968) playing Leo Bloom opposite Zero Mostel as Max Bialystock. It proved to be a box-office flop with decidedly mixed reviews. But, Wilder received an Academy Award nomination. He was suddenly hot in Hollywood.

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971) was not a flop. It successfully brought to life the weird, wild children’s book by Roald Dahl and it thoroughly established Wilder as a brilliant comic leading man. As the enigmatic Willy Wonka, Wilder really chewed some scenery. He received a Golden Globe Award nomination for best actor and was adored by young film fans.

But offers were few. he did a bit in Woody Allen‘s Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask (1972). As a last-minute replacement for Gig Young who was too drunk to perform, Wilder returned to Brooks’ direction in Blazing Saddles (1974) a stroke of luck that defined his career.

Blazing Saddles was a western like no other. It probably could never be made today. Brooks decided to be an equal opportunity offender, and the profane, demented film became a cult classic. The film premiered at the Pickwick Drive-In Theater in Burbank. Wilder and co-star Cleavon Little rode horses to the gala opening, and watched the film on horseback.

1974 was a particularly full year for Wilder. He reunited with Mostel for a film adaptation of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, and he played The Fox in a musical adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. He played the title role and co-wrote with Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, my favorite comic film. Like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein was designed to lampoon a genre, this time Horror films.  It is a nearly perfect film, unrelenting in its jokes and sight gags. Wilder’s co-stars matched his comic genius: Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn and Peter Boyle as the monster.

Wilder wrote, directed and starred in the silly The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother (1975) and the Rudolph Valentino spoof, The World’s Greatest Lover (1977). Young Frankenstein was a hit and still has a huge cult following, but the other films failed with the critics and at the box-office.

Yet, Wilder continued to do great work for the next decade. He became half of a comedy team with his friend Richard Pryor (he was the original choice for Blazing Saddles and received screenplay credit) in four fun films: Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) and Another You (1991). They all made money and Wilder was noted for his original deft comic touch.

In 1981, Wilder was cast opposite Saturday Night Live’s Gilda Radner in the fluffy Hanky Panky, directed by Sidney Poitier. Although they were both married at the time, Radner and Wilder fell in love on the set. The cutest couple ever, they married in 1984. The two brilliant comics had obvious affection for each other on screen and off. While trying to become pregnant, Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and sadly she left this world in 1989. To honor her memory, Wilder started Gilda’s Club, a support group for cancer patients.

By the 1990s, with a string of flops and a quickly canceled television series, Wilder retired from show business. In 1999, he announced that he had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, the same kind of cancer that I was in treatment for when I watched him in Bonnie and Clyde. After his treatment, Wilder appeared as a guest star on Will And Grace in 2002 and 2003. But now he says he has given up on show business: “I like show, but I don’t like the business.”

In 2005, he published a well written, witty, but rather heartbreaking memoir, Kiss Me Like A Stranger: My Search For Love And Art. He now lives in Connecticut where he continues to write. He has published two novels and a collection of short stories. There must be something about living through Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma that makes a curly haired guy want to give up acting for writing. Wilder:

“I’m not a natural writer. I’m not Arthur Miller, that’s a whole other thing, but let’s say more like Woody Allen. But the more I’ve written, the more I’ve found that there is a deep well in me somewhere that wants to express things that I’m not going to find unless I write them myself.”

Wilder is a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party. He staunchly opposed the Vietnam War and the Iraq War.

“I’m quietly political. I don’t like advertising. I will give money to someone I support, but I am not getting on a bandstand. I don’t want to run for President. I will write another book instead.”

Wilder remains a personal acting and writing idol for me. And then there is that whole cancer thing that we shared. There are now Gilda’s Club chapters across North America.

Gawker Media, which was ordered to pay about $140 million to Hulk Hogan, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday. It is also up for sale, with a difficult future following a contentious invasion-of-privacy lawsuit brought by the former wrestler.

Ziff Davis, the digital publisher of AskMen, PCMag and Computer Shopper, put up a bid for Gawker’s assets — with $100 million as the opening price The publisher plans to buy Gawker’s blogs — but not assume its liabilities. If no other offer emerges, the court must approve the sale’s price and terms.

Gawker’s properties include Gizmodo, Lifehacker and Deadspin, are expected to continue operations during bankruptcy proceedings. Ziff Davis CEO Vivek Shah wrote in a staff memo that was obtained by USA TODAY.

There’s a tremendous fit between the two organizations.

Nick Denton, founder of the online media company, had been considering selling Gawker’s blogs after a judge denied last month its motion to seek a new trial. Billionaire Peter Theil funded Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker with the goal to put them out of business. Gawker outed Theil several years ago and he’s been pissed ever since. I guess his money bought him some sweet revenge. (via USA Today)

In what looked to be a pretty low-key affair, Madonna‘s estranged brother, Christopher Ciccone, got married to Ray Thacker yesterday in a civil ceremony in Beverly Hills. A creative powerhouse, Christopher has been a back-up dancer for Madonna, helped her stage early tours, directed her videos and decorated her many houses over the years. He is now an artist. We have many friends in common and we are Facebook friends, not actual friends, so I occasionally see his updates. His married status was a bit of a surprise today. On the pic below of the two about to tie the knot, someone commented,

Where Madonna at?

To which Chris shot back,

She’s the guy in the background

As far as I can tell, his new husband is a Brit and a bit younger. Christopher just posted the pic below of their father’s Golden Wedding Anniversary just last month (he remarried after their mother died at a young age.)

We wish Christopher and Ray a long and happy marriage!

Here’s a sampling from a private collection of rare, massive 40” x 60” posters that were printed for drive-In movie theaters. Haute Campe offers a collection of original rare, vintage film posters from the 1940s-1970s originating mostly from drive-ins and grindhouse theaters. Most of the posters went through a single distributor called National Screen Service, hence the “property of N.S.S.” at the bottom of 99% of the movie posters printed in the 20th century. While most posters were destroyed by the elements some were returned to the distributor and piled up in their archives for many years. Design-wise, if we want something to look trashy, we still use these pioneering graphic solutions.

A 21-year-old man wielding two handguns shot former contestant on The Voice Christina Grimmie Friday night after a concert in Florida, and then fatally shot himself.

Grimmie, 22, died from her injuries from the shooting, which happened last night around 10:30 The Plaza Live in Orlando. The singer had just opened for the band Before You Exit and was meeting fans and signing autographs a half hour after the concert ended when she was shot.

Police said Grimmie’s brother as a hero, and said he tackled the suspect, whom they described as a white male with two loaded magazines and a large hunting knife in addition to the two handguns he was carrying. Orlando Police Chief John Mina told reporters,

Almost immediately, her brother Marcus Grimmie tackled the suspect. Shortly after that, the suspect killed himself.”

The suspect traveled to Orlando apparently to commit this crime and then had plans to travel back to where he came from.

This isn’t a crowd that you would suspect would be carrying guns into a venue like this.“

Detectives were scouring his cellphone and computer to find a motive for the killing. So far there was “no indication” that he knew Grimmie.

The shooting happened inside the venue as about 120 concertgoers crowded around Grimmie for a chance to meet her and buy merchandise. Fans’ purses and backpacks are typically checked when they enter The Plaza Live, but there are no metal detectors there.

Grimmie was a native of Marlton, New Jersey. She came in third on Season 6 of The Voice Adam Levine was her coach. Levine posted a photo of himself with Grimmie on Instagram, commenting before her death was confirmed:

Behati and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s death. Our hearts go out to her family

Other fellow artists and fans also wrote tributes to Grimmie, who was discovered on YouTube and had more than 3 million followers on her account zeldaxlove64. When reports of Grimmie’s death first surfaced, #PrayforChristina was the top trending hashtag on Twitter.

Grimmie’s publicist Heather Weiss confirmed her death early Saturday morning.

It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.

Very sad news. What a waste.
