QUOTES FROM ANDREW CHRISTIAN:
On Justin Beiber’s comments about no longer wanting to take photos with fans in public – “That’s such a douche comment. If it wasn’t for the fans who support him, he wouldn’t be there.”
On how he got started in fashion – “My goal every week was to make my own outfit to wear to these underground clubs I used to go to when I was in high school. I’d make clothes for myself and for or my friends, and we’d go out. I was 16.”
On how other kids reacted to his eye for fashion – “I was definitely the outsider, weird kid.”
On how his design career started in his late teens – “I’d run around Los Angeles with my samples, trying to sell them in any little shop I could get them into. I put myself through school by selling clothing in LA at different boutiques.”
On what world region is particularly drawn to the brand – “We’re really big in Japan. In Japan, they like the really wild, kinky underwear — the web thongs, and like anything that kind of looks a little tricky and out there. I think because, societally, they’re very conservative and that’s their way of not conforming.”
On the brand targeting a gay audience – “I think it’s really about being true to yourself and your own voice and not being afraid to be gay. There are a lot of companies out there that skid around it, and, at the end of the day, most of the guys buying this underwear are gay guys. That’s not to say that straight people don’t buy it, as well. A lot of women buy it for their husbands.”
On RuPaul’s DragCon – “I was kind of surprised when I was at [RuPaul’s] DragCon two weekends ago; so many women came up and knew who I was and knew about the underwear — and their husbands wear the underwear.”
On using regular models vs. using porn stars as models – “Our regualr guys we use for more basic products, and the guys who have been in porn…we kind of put them in the racier underwear that the other models may not be as comfortable in.
On the downside of using porn stars as models for the brand – “It’s a problem watching porn, for me though, now. I can’t watch a porn if I know somebody who’s in it; it’s like a total boner killer. I know so many of these guys now…”
On the positive impact of designer underwear – “The underwear look great on the models, but they’re actually designed and engineered to fit real people with real bodies. The underwear give people a lot of confidence that they might not otherwise have. Something as trivial as designer underwear can do a lot of good for people.”
On why he hasn’t dated one of his models – “I’ve always liked to keep a professional distance. And, there are so many boys in LA anyway…”
On how he feels that his name is probably one of the last things men see before they get it on – “That makes me feel really good!”
