Who Will Inherit Prince’s $300 Million Fortune & Song Catalogue?

$

10380694_GEveryone is still in shock at the the death of Prince. Aside from how he died, it’s not immediately clear who stands to inherit his fortune and song catalogue.

Prince Rogers Nelson, died in his home state of Minnesota, where, in the absence of a will, inheritance laws determine how an estate is divided. The estate goes, in order, to the following people; grandchildren, parents and siblings, followed by other relatives. Prince’s parents have been dead for more than a decade. Four of his siblings are ones still alive (at least two have died).

The singer had no living children. His son with first wife Mayte Garcia, Boy Gregory, died from complications related to Pfeiffer syndrome seven days after his birth in October of 1996. Three years later, Prince ended his marriage with Garcia, who said that they never recovered from the loss. Prince later married Manuela Testolini, but that ended in 2006 after five years.

Prince was a faithful Jehovah’s Witness who reportedly regularly attended Kingdom Hall services, it stands to reason he may have willed at least a portion of his fortune to the church. He contributed to many charities over the years including the Elevate Hope Foundation, which was founded by muse, drummer Sheila E. It uses music and the arts to support children who have experienced abuse.

Prince’s estate is worth $300 million, according to the Celebrity Net Worth. Of course that figure will increase if his his unreleased music sees the light of day.

He was a shrewd businessman recently signing an exclusive deal with new music streaming service Tidal, which removed his music from every other music streaming website. (If you were like me you were on Spotify looking for music yesterday.)

Prince sold more than 80 million records globally, which puts him in the top tier of all-time album sales. I can seriously recommend his Hits & B-Sides. I was listening to it all day yesterday and it reminds you that he really was a musical genius.

The body of Prince is at this hour undergoing an autopsy as TMZ is reporting that he was treated for a drug overdose just 6 days before his death. According to TMZ,

We broke the story … Prince’s private jet made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois last Friday, hours after he performed in Atlanta. At the time his reps said he was battling the flu … something we questioned because his plane was only 48 minutes from home before the unscheduled landing.

Multiple sources in Moline tell us, Prince was rushed to a hospital and doctors gave him a ‘save shot’ … typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate.

Our sources further say doctors advised Prince to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. His people demanded a private room, and when they were told that wasn’t possible … Prince and co. decided to bail. The singer was released 3 hours after arriving and flew home.

We’re told when Prince left he ‘was not doing well.’

We know authorities in Minnesota are trying to get the hospital records from Moline to help determine cause of death.

We have made more than a dozen attempts to reach Prince’s reps for comment, but they went radio silent.

It doesn’t matter much as nothing will bring him back, but we’ll find out what happened soon enough.

I saw Prince last night and almost cried #dearlybeloved

A Blind Man Tries to Wrap His Head Around the Concept of Photographs and Paintings

Tommy Edison has been blind since birth. In his always fascinating vlog, he attempts to describe the way he understands things like colors, snowflakes, and handwriting. In this episode, he expresses confusion about depth perception and two-dimensional art (like photographs or paintings).

“Vision is an incredible thing, ” he says. “I have no idea how it works. The things that you are able to do BLOWS MY MIND. Like depth perception. Like you’re driving a car, you’re going along at 45 mph, then there’s red light and you just cruise right up to it and stop. I don’t understand how that works. Or there’s a crowded room full of people. And across the room you see one of your friends. And you know that you can just walk right through the crowd and find them. And you just keep your eye on them and you get right to them. It’s really cool to me. Or catching a ball. That to me is neat.”

Something else he just doesn’t understand is how we can draw a 3-dimension thing on a flat piece of paper.

“You people can draw a car on a flat piece of paper and anybody who sees it would go ‘Oh there’s a car!’ – I don’t get how you do that! To me, it’s just a flat thing. I get sculpture. It’s three-dimensional. It’s all dry logical. But flat paper? i don’t understand how you can see it!”

Fascinating stuff. Watch it below.

Jimmy_Nelson_Before_They_Pass_01

Dangerous Minds has posted a stunning series of photographs documenting disappearing tribes and indigenous peoples from the book Before They Pass Away. Photographer Jimmy Nelson spent nearly three years tracking down the 35 plus tribes he captured in these achingly gorgeous images. His aim, he says, was to capture portraits of the disappearing people groups and to preserve glimpses of their rites, customs, and traditions.

Nelson explains his work:

“There is no sociology, no statistics. It’s how I see the world. I am aiming to document the variety and importance of what is left of indigenous culture. Yes, it’s idealistic. Indigenous peoples are usually portrayed as impoverished. But they have a wealth and a pride. It’s not only about material possessions. I shoot from a very personal, aesthetic point of view. Different people can interpret what they like.”

The results are absolutely breathtaking. Haunting. Heartbreaking. A world so far removed our own, it’s hard to believe it still exits.

#RememberingPrince: Friends, Acquaintances & Fans Share Their Stories of the Purple One

prince-946-getty

It’s sad when people leave suddenly, especially when we admire but don’t really know them. But one way people remain “alive” is through remembering them. I love hearing random encounters and thoughts about Prince, and I thought I’d share a few friends’ stories here, including my own minor one…

My story is not about a direct encounter with Prince, I never met him, rather it’s a funny story that was told to me by someone in our stage crew on tour in 1989-90, who left for a while to work with Prince, then returned to work with us again. He said that whenever Prince saw him, he would ask,

‘Who’s that little band you were with… they sing that little song, then he would sing in his falsetto voice, love shack, baby Love Shack?‘” –The B-52s’, Keith Strickland

Chi Chi (Valenti) and I are battling over the best description of Prince. My favorite was by L.A. Reid, ‘He could steal your woman wearing high heels.

Chi Chi’s was by Robert Christgau on seeing Prince for the first time: ‘Mick Jagger should fold up his penis and go home.‘” –DJ, Johnny Dynell

The first time I laid eyes on him was at the Ritz in December 1980 where I was djing and he was playing for the Dirty Mind tour. The Ritz was still a fairly new venue opening in May of that year. That was the show that changed it all. For me, for the Ritz and I think for Prince too. It was insane. He came back again and played in March of 1981. Lucky to have witnessed that and all that came after. Saw him many times after and obviously was a massive influence. All the bands and artists he worked with, the careers he is responsible for is pretty astounding. I really used to love when he put out those non lp b-sides “She’s Always in My Hair”, “Erotic City”, “17 Days”. Just too good. He will be so missed, but damm he seemed to do it all and did it on his own terms. Pop life. The artist.” –Justin Strauss

“Prince in Rio! I had the pleasure of being backstage at Rio’s Maracanã Stadium during 1991’s edition of Rock In Rio festival. There was a massive sense of anticipation for his arrival and security was super tight. I had a quick peek into his dressing room – It was all customized in purple drapes, purple pillows, purple candles, purple everything… Then suddenly more excitement as he entered the stadium and passed in front of me with his private security team lead by this beautiful woman! There was a lock down in the corridors, no one could really move around. Then I went down to see his concert from the grass and will never forget the looooooong and out of this world rendition of Purple Rain he played on his Purple piano!!!! Prince was an amazing music innovator and a true pop star in the old school sense of the term! He blew the stadium away!! Shine on Purple Star!” –producer, Béco Dranoff

Prince by Warhol, 1984

Prince by Warhol, 1984

My story isn’t a direct encounter with Prince either but I remember this vividly. I was working for Vanity Fair in the art department and we were doing a story on the Prince phenomenon, and hired Andy Warhol to do the illustration for the story. (I still have a hard proof of the one shown here.) For some reason, I got invited to a screening of Purple Rain which was in a theater in Times Square. It was not the kind of red carpet premiere you have today, and Prince wasn’t there, but this new singer who was starting to get hot at the time was; Madonna. She was with her friend Debi Mazar, who I knew at the time and they sat directly in the row in front of us and said hi coming in. I remember Madonna REALLY rocking out and SUPER into the music all through the film as we all were. Prince & Madonna were just about THE hottest things on the planet in ’84, and there they were (sort of) right in front of me. It was a moment.” –artist/blogger, Trey Speegle

Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, products of very religious upbringings: a Jehovah’s Witness, a Seventh Day Adventist turned Jehovah’s Witness, and a deep Catholic school girl named for the Virgin Mother and at war with ‘the father.’ Very interesting to consider together. All–at the same, high 80s moment, really– acting out the freedom of the body and explosive sexuality, exorcising demons, trying to get free, producing music where sexual and religious images mingled, creating more powerful new selves. So much rebellion, conflict, creativity. Yet classic American strivers. Messy inside but unparalleled, perfectionistic professionals, worker bees, hitting the mark at any cost. But the men both seemed so personally conflicted and tortured inside. Michael for sure. Don’t need to repeat that story. Prince, still sometimes needing to project ‘ladies man’ though as seemingly gender-complex as M.J., perhaps struggling more privately as it seems that he was actually conservative and somewhat uncomfortable with gays, himself. Intensely private and mysterious yet exhibitionistic. How did their race figure? Even their size–diminuitive and fey and kind of the antithesis of the desirable male in black culture, but creating their own kind of power, perhaps out of necessity…

All suffering intense physical pain for the work and one dead from a pain-killer. Excruciating/exquisite control of the body and maniacal control of the work, but not the head or heart. No big thesis, just scattered thoughts. So much going on inside those beautiful ones, intensity and creativity on fire. Driven. I miss the moment when they reigned, those sexy hymns we danced to. Exciting. Maybe just because I was young. Maybe because I am still struggling.” –Author, George Hodgman

When I was 18 years old and studying in Paris at the time I was a resident dj in this club called Montana. One night the manager of the club called me and said that Prince had requested to have the club privatized for him and a few friends and that he specifically asked that I play the music after hearing me a few nights before. Keep in mind that I was a huge fan of Prince since a very young age and that I would play his records on vinyl as a little toddler in my Dads studio.

“The song ‘Kiss’ is in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. I was very excited when I got the call as you can imagine. To make a long story short… Prince showed up around 3ish after I had been playing an empty dance floor for about 4 hours already. He walked in with this gorgeous woman that, I kid you not was twice his size (even with the 5 inch heels he had on) . I was playing a lot of funk and disco which he seemed to be enjoying and dancing to. Fifteen minutes into the party he requested that I play a few of his songs. I played “let’s dance” by Bowie followed by “Kiss”. He turned around and gave me a thumbs up. Seconds after hearing his record drop, he leaned in to his date of the night and kissed her on the lips at the exact moment he says kiss in the song.

I continued playing his music until he came back in the DJ booth and asked for some James Brown. He danced a little bit longer and took his friends and date back to his Paris home. He did not sit down the whole night while I was spinning. Before he left he thanked me, shook my hand with his leather gloves he was wearing and told me I was a talented disc jockey. It was a surreal moment for me at the time and I can easily say it is one of the highlights of my ‘DJ career’. I recorded the mix from that night which I will be uploading in the next few weeks after some digging through my laptops. Deeply saddened by this news today. I am currently in london where I will be spinning his music tonight in his honor. ‪#‎RIP‬ to the master of psychedelic rock and intergalactic funk. A true musical genius, icon and most of all a genuine nice person. My condolences to all his close ones.” –DJ, Lino Meoli, son of Maripol

“The audacity of Prince Rogers Nelson did not flower with fame and purchase –did not even begin with music, since by all accounts he strode with slight stature onto a junior high school basketball court, throwing shade with the same shy-but-Sly buoyancy we would all witness later in performance. He laid down the law like a landing strip in the rain forest, his flickering lights serving as our clearance from the tower, all touching down safely behind him. He was possessed of the ecstasy of Little Richard, the locomotion of James Brown; the fusing spark-shower of Jimi Hendrix. He understood the sublime and abstracted alchemy of Miles [Davis], the impatient genius of Ray [Charles]; the giddy volatility of Sly Stone, the cat-and-mouse come-on of Marvin Gaye. He embodied the Saturday night/Sunday morning disparities of the Reverend Al –and his persona was as cunning and confounding as that of Salvador Dali.

I have ceased distinguishing between the religious and the secular, for everything is holy: our courage and humility, our senses both lost and found; our love and our lust…all that shall swoon and couple, leaving in their wake the real hope that, late as is the hour –with as much as we have been given and squandered; as little as we might deserve it, though we stomp and plead— there may yet be more on offer: God willing, just one more song sung into high rafters before we are finally called to quit and disperse.” –musician and producer, Joe Henry (posted by photographer Maude Schuyler Clay)

“I had greeted him as he came into the party and had just admired his ass in that jumpsuit which Siskel kidded me for so obviously doing. Then later I went up to his bodyguard standing right next to him and knowingly played the game.

May I speak to Prince?

I asked the bodyguard as Prince listened above the din and dared to smile at my knowingness. This was Vanity Fair’s first Oscar party at Morton’s in 1994 and he was the biggest star in the room. Yet no one else seemed to be going up to him. The bodyguard looked down at The Diminutive One who, in turn, nodded his approval – knowingly.

Yeah, you can,

the bodyguard said. So, Prince and I had a little Oscar party tete-a-tete.

Gigolos get lonely too, huh,’

I said to get his attention – which it did. I then told him about the one time I ever saw him perform. It was the Purple Rain tour in Daly City at the Cow Palace. I was visiting San Francisco for the first time and a friend, Adam Block, who was the music critic for the Advocate, had prime seats right next to the stage. I also told him his jump suit made his ass look hot. He lowered those eyelids of his, deciding if he should take that as a compliment or a threat. I wasn’t sure if he was going to hit me with his walking cane. He tapped me on my own butt instead.

You’re right.‘ he said.

And laughed – knowingly – a gigolo giggle, amusement gargled back down in his throat where those guttural notes could be grunted out amidst those airy high ones that could so shockingly take flight as he himself now has.” –Author, Kevin Sessums

“I was working the door at the ex-Sound Factory (after Ingrid Casares gave up trying to turn it into something else and before it became Twilo). Saturday nights were big, and on this particular one during fashion week Donatella Versace was having a private party for her 1998 ad campaign with Courtney Love. Mobbed confusion at the door all night, lots of famous faces. At some point a beefy guy in a suit approached the side and said,

I’ve got Prince in the car over there for the Donatella party but he doesn’t like being bumped or hassled by people.

He motioned to a limo across the street. I told him to get my attention when ready, and I’d make sure there was a path they could sneak through quickly on the side. He got back in the limo and drove off. A half hour later the same limo slowly pulls up right in front of the crowd, not the side, and the guy gets out and looks at me. I motioned him to the side but it was too late.

Slowly out of the door of the limo emerges, not Prince, but five tall, beefy security guards in matching dark suits, with arms locked in a circle to form a sort of human cage, their open Prada jackets making a curtain. I yelled for people to back-up as this contorted, human tarantula sloooowly crawled out of the limo (two of the bodyguards facing backwards) and inched towards us. It was an acrobatic wonder! People stared. The crowd naturally parted for such a spectacle.

New Yorkers (back then) didn’t yell or take pictures around famous people, they’d just go weirdly quiet. But who were we gawking at? They didn’t know. I wasn’t sure. It could’ve been anybody! Sure enough, as I lifted the velvet rope and they wobbled their way into the door I caught a square-inch of purple from inside the walking flesh cage.

An hour later, Rob Fernandez came out and said,

Prince wants to leave.

And as the same human contraption inched it’s way out of the club (this time in reverse), I heard a muffled but unmistakable voice from deep inside say,

Thank you.

It crawled back in the limo and drove off. A security guard turned and asked me,

Was that really Prince?

I said, ‘It had to be.

April 23: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

#BornThisDay: Actor: Judy Davis

davis

April 23, 1955Judy Davis:

“I never wanted celebrity. It’s not a game I’ve ever been interested in. My life leads my work, and I wouldn’t want it to be the reverse.”

I feel strongly that Judy Davis should stand shoulder-pad to shoulder-pad with other great Gay Icons like Judy Garland, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Withering contempt is her film performance specialty. Her menu of tics and twitches, her drop-dead chagrin, and her rankling have been used to blistering effect in her work for Woody Allen, like Celebrity (1998) Husbands and Wives (1992) and Deconstructing Harry (1997).

Allen seems to have understood her, but other directors have endured her characteristic temper, including David Lean, who used her so effectively in A Passage to India (1984) based on the E.M. Forster novel, and George Sluizer (who I worked with in The Vanishing in 1998) during Dark Blood (2012) when producers had to intervene.

But, as a film fan, I find Davis to be one of the bravest, fiercest actors of the last half-century. Beginning with her breakthrough performance as the bad-tempered, budding writer in Gillian Armstrong’s My Brilliant Career (1979), launching her screen persona as an anti-bimbo, a smart cookie dipped in poison. Davis worked mostly in Australia during the 1980s, often with her actor husband, Colin Friels.

They love Davis in her Down Under. She is an eight time AACTA Award winner (the Australian Academy). She has also won two BAFTA Awards and has received Academy Award nominations for A Passage To India and Husbands And Wives (1992). She is also has 11 Emmy Award nominations with three Emmy statues on her shelf: for playing the gentle, supportive lover of Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer, played by Glenn Close, the dedicated mother and medical officer who has spent most of her life serving in the US military, before getting the boot for loving another woman in Serving In Silence (1995), the title role in Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows (2001), and the comic miniseries The Starter Wife (2007).

Her Oscar nominated performance as Adela, whose assault sparks an Anglo-Indian scandal, in A Passage To India is a fine, nuanced performance that makes the film really work, but was nearly overshadowed by her fights with its director. About David Lean she has noted:

“He was a frightening, Lear-like figure. He came with this enormous reputation but he wasn’t at the height of his physical powers, and I think he carried a lot of tension because of that. I perhaps didn’t appreciate that fully at the time, probably because I was overly aware of my own inadequacies. So when David tensed up, I tensed up. I’ve never been very good at being snapped at. I went into self-defense mode. It was endlessly fascinating watching Lean and the turmoil he was in. How he tried to dig himself out of it. Entire days’ filming would be cancelled because he’d decide the set needed to be re-dressed. Obviously he simply didn’t feel ready to shoot that day. It was all very … interesting.”

Davis survived to give amazing performances in a string of films by great directors: David Cronenberg‘s Naked Lunch (1991), The Coen BrothersBarton Fink, and Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006). Davis:

“When I started I was so hyper-self-conscious, so horrified that what I was doing would be committed to film with somebody else controlling it. What eased those fears is working with people like Cronenberg and Woody Allen. The film is their creature. They know what they’re doing. That’s when I found it doesn’t have to be a catastrophe.”

Davis has made 5 films with Allen: Alice (1990), Husbands And Wives, Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity, and To Rome, With Love (2012).

My favorite Davis performances are her mannish female writer George Sand opposite Hugh Grant’s Frédéric Chopin in the astoundingly good Impromptu (1991), and her fearless work when she revisited E. M. Forster’s world in Where Angels Fear To Tread (1991) with Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves, and Helen Mirren. Davis is simply delicious opposite Kevin Spacey in the very funny comedy The Ref (1994), portraying a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, with Denis Leary as a thief who counsels them on relationships. There is a palpably maniacal underpinning to many of her characters that reaches a zenith in this film. Davis has an innate gift for delivering spiteful dialogue. She and Spacey are the most unsympathetic, insufferable bickering double-act I have ever seen on film. Davis gives a playfully caustic turn in this, one of my favorite Christmas films ever, right behind Bad Santa (2003).

I am also big on her portrayal of writer Lillian Hellman in Dash And Lilly (1999) with Sam Shepard as author Dashiell Hammett, and directed Kathy Bates; add in her icy interpretation of Nancy Reagan in the controversial The Reagans (2003) with James Brolin as Ronnie.

But, the true Davis career high for me was Judy as Judy in Life With Judy Garland: Me And My Shadows with Tammy Blanchard and Davis both winning Emmys for their work as young Frances Gumm and the Davis as the adult Garland. Davis is astonishing in a powerhouse performance. Davis gets inside Garland’s skin and captures her mannerisms, physicality, and the spirit of the troubled legend. The whole enterprise is so much better than I would have thought a made for television film about Garland ever could be, with high production values and strong acting all around.

Plain and simple, Davis doesn’t work enough. I am not certain if that is the industry or her choice. She stays out of the spotlight. Except for her on set flare-ups, I rarely read about her except in connection with a film. Her last project was with Kate Winslet in The Dressmaker in 2015, a hit in Australia, but I am not sure if it even played in the USA.

If a female having an opinion in Hollywood is considered a liability then Davis is easily one of the most dangerous of women. The petite, pale, redhead, with her trademark slash of red lipstick, she is one of our finest actors even with a reputation for high artistic standards and frank speech. Not unlike that other Davis, Bette. She is one of the few actors whose participation in a project is enough for me to want to see it.

The Prince Auction In March Was a Flop. Why Didn’t His Stuff Sell?

Prince & Mayte's wedding pic, Valentine's Day 1996

Prince & Mayte’s wedding pic, Valentine’s Day 1996

Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 9.18.23 AM

In March I posted a story about Prince‘s ex, Mayte Garcia‘s auction of memorabilia. After his death yesterday, I checked back to see how well the items had sold and was shocked to see most items had been withdrawn, and only a few had sold, like the faux-diamond encrusted handcuff and the cancelled check I had my eye on.

The auction was “curated” by Mayte and Prince’s former manager Owen Husney –which makes you wonder if Prince ever wanted it to happen at all?

Vanity Fair featured this interview with Mayte about her relationship with Prince, which ended in 2000.

Our entire time together was amazing and surreal, and he showed me some incredible things and introduced me to incredible people,” said the ex, for whom Prince wrote The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.

The two married on Valentine’s Day 1996 in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis. Fittingly, white doves were released as the duo exchanged vows. Prince, as you might imagine, was not a prototypical husband—never taking Garcia on a date (although their home did have a night club inside), always wearing high heels, and, because of his mid-career name change, making it hard for Garcia to address him.

We never had any pet names, and I don’t think in the whole time we were together I called him anything, which I guess is a bit weird.”

I never called him Prince because I wanted him to be a person to me, not the man behind Purple Rain. Plus, technically, I was married to the Symbol. Our house was full of them, but I just couldn’t say the word. When we got married it was much easier. If someone else was there I could say,

Could I speak to my husband please?’”

Sadly, the two split after losing their son, Boy Gregory, a week after he was born, and suffering another miscarriage.

There is no animosity or bad blood, and he was my husband and the father of my child. So although I am not actively in love with him, I will always love him—he’s a great guy.

And now he’s gone suddenly.

Here are some of the superstar’s fab costumes, props, jewelry and even his wedding china that went unsold. The day after his death the auction was still up at here at Nate D. Sanders Auctions, but it seems to have been taken down now. As with most things, after his passing of course these things, which were already pricey, have just become priceless.

Beyoncé Just Changed All Our Lives For The Better With The Release Of ‘LEMONADE: The Visual Album’

Unless you live under a very sad depressing rock, you probably knew that Beyoncé premiered a film called Lemonade on HBO tonight. It all started last weekend when she dropped a mysterious 1-minute long video teaser. Members of the Beyhive everywhere were basically losing it this entire week in preparation for SOMETHING, even though no one knew what to expect.

Beyoncé didn’t disappoint. The film was an hour-long visual that accompanied several of the tracks on the album which dropped exclusively on TIDAL about midway through the HBO feature. A lot of thematic ground was covered in Lemonade throughout the gorgeous visuals, music, and spoken word poetry. As described by TIDAL, the album is “a conceptual project based on every woman’s journey of self-knowledge and healing.” It covers topics such as suffering through a male romantic partner’s infidelity, daddy issues, black feminism, and made a point to bring the deep south back from the margins of radical blackness. In addition, Lemonade took a moment to honor Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown as well by portraying their mothers holding portraits of their late sons.

In case you missed out on the television event, check out some of these tweets to get caught up and head on over to TIDAL to experience it all for yourself.

…And excuse me while I go recover.

#BornThisDay: Double Diva Dose. Streisand And MacLaine

streisandmacalaine

April 24, 1934– Shirley MacLaine has six Academy Award nominations, with a well-deserved win for Terms Of Endearment, (1983), 20 Golden Globe nominations with seven wins including Best Newcomer in 1955 and the Cecil B DeMille Look Alike Award in 1998, plus she is the author of 15 books, all bestsellers, on top of that, she sings and she dances.

MacLaine was discovered on Broadway dancing in the musical The Pajama Game (1954) when she famously went on as the understudy for Carol Haney who had broken her ankle. Her first film was Alfred Hitchcock‘s The Trouble With Harry (1955). She continues to work into the second decade of the 21st century. Attempting to count her filmography, I lost track at 75 films. MacLaine has received the highest film industry honor, the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 2012, and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2013.

MacLaine’s brother is an actor also. His name is Warren Beatty. They have never worked together, but that is something I would pay to see, especially if they were to play senior citizen lovers.

She talks to her rat terrier Terry and her dog talks back. In 2011, she gave a frightfully furious, funny performance, one of her best, in the terrific film Bernie, and (spoiler alert!) a messy, unfocused portrayal of Cora Crawley, the Countess of Grantham’s American mother on Downton Abbey. But mostly, she is simply fabulous. I love her life and her films, television apperances and her work in films. She was simply sparkling in her second Oscar nominated performance in Billy Wilder’s cynical, yet tender The Apartment (1960), opposite her best co-star Jack Lemmon. Favored to win that year, she lost to Elizabeth Taylor for Butterfield 8. MacLaine stated:

“I thought I would win for The Apartment, but then Elizabeth Taylor had a tracheotomy…”

My favorite MacLaine role would have to be Doris (a thinly disguised Debbie Reynolds) in Postcards From The Edge (1990). It is my understanding that The Gays just adore her.

“I’ve made so many movies playing a hooker that they don’t pay me in the regular way anymore. They leave it on the dresser.”

shirleydogx-large streisand

April 24, 1942– She sings, she dances, she acts, she directs, she does the screenplays, she writes the scores! Barbra Streisand has had five Academy Award nominations with two wins, including one as a composer. She has 16 Golden Globe nominations with eight wins including the Cecil B DeMille Look Alike Award in 2000, plus nine Grammy Awards. She is one of only a handful of performers to have an Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy. All her statues and medals are tastefully arranged in a special temperature controlled Art Deco display case in her hermetically sealed basement at one of her Malibu houses. Streisand is the only artist to have a #1 album in six different decades. In 2011, Streisand was presented with the Film Society Of Lincoln Center’s Charlie Chaplin Award, presented to her by her pal Bill Clinton. Like MacLaine, Streisand has been given the American Film Institute Award and a Kennedy Center Honor.

Streisand is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with more than 68.5 million albums in the United States and with a total of 145 million records sold worldwide, making her the bestselling female artist of all time. She is the only artist who is currently a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), Screen Actors Guild/ Federation Of Television And Radio Artists, The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts And Sciences, and Actors’ Equity Association, as well as the weekend manager of the Beverly Hills Hadassah Thrift Shop.

Her stepson is hunky actor Josh Brolin. In 2011, Streisand published a frightening coffee table book about her questionable interior designing taste. I passed on that one. She gave her very cute, talented son Jason Gould a role in her underrated film Prince Of Tides (1991). She talks to her dog Sammy and he talks back. In 2012, Streisand starred with Seth Rogen in the film The Guilt Trip (2012). Although I love a good two-Jews-On-A Road Trip flick, I passed on this one too. My sources tell me that she is still on track to star in a new film version of my favorite musical Gypsy. At this rate Streisand will be the first Mama Rose to use a walker.

“I’m not weird, just different from people who aren’t different.”

She has a very famous nose. As a person with a pronounced proboscis, she immediately became a personal hero to me after the first time I saw her spellbinding performance on The Tonight Show in April 1961 singing Harold Arlen‘s A Sleepin’ Bee. I was a rather savvy seven year old gay boy. I knew my show business legends like Judy Garland, Ethel Merman and Lena Horne, but I had never seen or heard anything like Streisand. I was hooked.

Of that nose, critic John Simon wrote: “It towers like a ziggurat made of meat”.

Unlike the real life Fanny Brice, who had work done to broaden her appeal (Dorothy Parker wrote: “Brice cut off her nose to spite her race.”), Streisand decided early in her career that she would never mess with the schnoz. That nose was inseparable part of her persona.

In the 1960s, Vogue Magazine dubbed Streisand “a whole new taste in beauty.” She posed on the cover of Playboy. Streisand is also a diva almost without peer, and we love her for that.

When an emotional Streisand accepted her Oscar for Funny Girl, tying with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion In Winter (the first exact tie in a principal Academy Award category), she purred: “Hello, gorgeous!” (her opening line in Funny Girl).

Ironically, for all the control she has demanded of her screen work, her highest grossing film is Meet The Fockers (2004), which did more than $517,00,000 worldwide. Who knew? My favorite Streisand role would have to be Doris in The Owl And The Pussycat (1970). I hear that The Gays really love her. I know I do. She represents the way we were.

This pair of Gay Icons and Fashion Icons share a birthday today, April 24th. They are both liberal stalwarts and outspoken old broads. In a long standing tradition, they spend their birthdays together. I would like to be a fly on the wall at that tea party.

#AnnusHorribilis: Why Is This Looking Like THE Worst Year Ever For Celebrity Deaths?

deaths2016
Queen Elizabeth just turned 90 and in 1992, she had what she referred to as her “annus horribilis”, which is not a terrible butt affliction but rather latin for “horrible year.” That horrible year saw the Prince of Wales separate from Lady Diana, and her sensational portrayal in Andrew Morton‘s biography. And then the Princess Royal divorced. The Duke of York‘s freshly estranged wife, Sarah, graced the tabloids topless and had her toes sucked by an enthusiastic “financial adviser”. But with the exception of Diana, they all lived.

Yes, sadly people die every day, but most of them we will never hear of. We don’t know most famous people either, but we feel connected to them by their work. 2016 is stacking up to be one of the worst years for star deaths, and we’re barely a third of the way through. Book-ended by Prince this week and Bowie in January, there were MANY more than this, I’m sure. Here are some you might recognize like Doris Roberts who went at 90 and Nancy Reagan at 94. We should all be so lucky to live that long.

#LGBTQ: Was the “Mona Lisa” Based on daVinci’s Gay Lover, Salai?

The Mona Lisa in Paris.

Many think this sketch by daVinci is of Salai

Many think this sketch by daVinci is of Salai

One art historian thinks so. He thinks he’s cracked the code to the Mona Lisa‘s elusive smile was inspired by da Vinci’s gay lover.

Art historian Silvano Vinceti, after examining an infra-red analysis of the famous painting, claims that the was based on two people in da Vinci’s life: a rich Tuscan merchant’s wife, Lisa Gherardini, as most historians would agree and the artist’s apprentice (and alleged lover) Gian Giacomo Caprotti, known to da Vinci as Salai or “Little Devil.”

In an interview, Vinceti, who heads the research group National Committee for Cultural Heritage, explained that the infra-red findings prove that “the Mona Lisa is androgynous–half man and half woman.”

You see it particularly in Mona Lisa’s nose and in her forehead and her smile.

Vinceti’s claims are based on a close study of other paintings of Salai, who lived and worked with da Vinci for nearly twenty years.

Monna Vanna – a nude version of the Mona Lisa.

Monna Vanna – a nude version of the Mona Lisa.

Juicy though Vinceti’s analysis is, many art experts aren’t sold on the idea that the painting was inspired by the artist’s young apprentice. Martin Kemp, professor emeritus of the history of art at Trinity College, Oxford says,

This is a mish-mash of known things, semi-known things and complete fantasy. The infra-red images do nothing to support the idea that Leonardo somehow painted a blend of Lisa Gherardini and Salai.

Kemp, is currently at work on a new book, Mona Lisa: The People and the Painting, adds that no one knows for sure what exactly Salai looked like. (Although many have said the drawing at the left is Salai)

“Giorgio Vasari (a contemporary painter and a chronicler of Renaissance artists) described him as a pretty boy with curly hair, but that was a standard type of the era. It featured in Leonardo’s work long before Salai came on the scene.”

It commonly believed that upon Leonardo’s death in 1519, Salaì inherited several paintings including the Mona Lisa, which might back up the theory that Salai was the model for the painting.

NYC scene queen Ladyfag brings back the ultimate gay Sunday night fête with new weekly Battle Hymn. If you’re looking for a flashback to the good ol’ days where homos, heteros, drag queens, club kids and every creature in between live in harmony on the dance floor, this is the place to see it all, in its semi-natural habitat. The 10,000 sq feet super club Flash Factory (formerly Shadow Nightclub) has been completely re-worked, taking its new inspiration from abandoned churches decor, with a sinners’ soundtrack of disco, classic house music and tech house. Hosts include Amada Lepore, Avi Vichner, Grandfather Hector Xtravaganza, MILK (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Kyle Farmery, Princess Magnifique, Sussi, Ryan Burke and more! Resident DJs Honey Dijon and The Carry Nation.

Ladyfag:

Music is a unifying force. Stripped down of all gimmicks & armed with a next level sound system and lighting, Battle Hymn continues the long tradition in gay culture of going to ‘church’ on Sundays, the night begins with 9pm-midnight dedicated to disco & classic house, with the second half of the night going harder with a blend of house & tech house. Opening night was inaugurated with house legend Todd Terry making the crowd dance till the lights came up! The gospel according to the dance floor.. Battle Hymn.” (via Flaunt)

#BornThisDay: Artist, Cy Twombly

Twombly-006

April 25, 1928, Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. should have had the life of a Virginia Southern gentleman, but instead he became one of the last century’s most important artists, and the lover and comrade of fellow artist Robert Rauschenberg. Cy Twombly was also the pal of the great artistic circle of the 1950s NYC Avant-Garde: musician John Cage, Dancer/Choreographer Merce Cunningham, and artists Ray Johnson and Jasper Johns. It is one of my favorite periods for art and popular culture and the history of the city.

In the mid-1950s, Twombly and Rauschenberg did the grand tour thing in Europe. Rauschenberg returned to NYC and became very, very famous. After that, basically Twombly stayed, settling in Italy, just in time for the focus of the Art World to shift decisively from Europe to NYC. Life in Italy and its impressions of classicism informed Twombly’s work the rest of his life and was symbolic of his idiosyncrasies, his unique sense of the modern but also the ancient.

He shunned publicity throughout his life and he ignored his critics, who constantly questioned whether his work deserved a place at the forefront of 20th century Abstractionism. Twombly’s paintings, favorites of The Husband and mine, thrillingly viewed in museums in Italy and the USA, are huge, complex and richly detailed, with scratches, erasures, paint drips, graphite, containing fragments of Italian and classical verse amid scrawled phalluses. His works references the High European Culture of the past and mostly ignores modern American issues. With so many of Twombly’s works having classical and literary associations, with titles such as the School Of Athens and with hidden lines by Sappho, Ovid, and Keats, you might think that his paintings are given to a sort of seriousness, but for me they are filled with mischief and humor. Search hard and you can spot those phalluses appear among his squiggles, although, while studying his giant canvases with my boyfriend in the 1970s, he insisted that they were not penises at all, but carrots and spaceships.

As a reaction to a prejudice against left-handedness, right-handed Twombly began to draw “as if with his left hand”. By literally denying himself dexterity, he purposely diminished his control of his creative process. He took this even further during his military service as a cryptographer in the early 1950s by working at night, in the dark.

He brought a distinctive, thrilling, brand from references to the high culture of the past, only occasionally referring to contemporary events or issues. Yet, despite this ignoring of the present, Twombly had early successes by offering his clever alternative to the popular Abstract Expressionism and he still managed to keep going long enough to come back into fashion.

One of the aspects of Twombly’s work that is so appealing is that childlike application of paint. Each painting is so charming in the primitive way that colors are layered on top of one another. In many works, you can see Twombly’s hand prints.  Others have drippings. Bright, striking, what’s not to love about his unabandoned experimentation with color?

The prolific Twombly became one of the major figures in late 20th century art and his paintings now hang in the most important museums including MOMA, The Louvre, even my town’s Portland Art Museum. Even in his lifetime, Twombly’s painting sold in the millions of dollars. After his death in 2011, the prices hit the stratosphere. In 2014, his work, Blackboard, sold at auction for $69.6 million.

It’s easy to understand why Twombly’s work is deemed mysterious, inaccessible, or ineptly executed.  It’s experimental.  It’s fun.  It’s warm. It accesses a primitive form of expression.  Studying a Twombly at MOMA, the woman behind me said to her companion: “I don’t get it. My toddler could do this…” Even a child can scribble and play with paints, but few of us can do much better than that. Or can we?

Twombly_cnd-articleLarge

When Twombly left this world in 2011, taken by that damn cancer at 83 years old, he had become a figure of unique mystery in Modern Art: an American who chose to live in Italy, an abstract artist inspired by myth and history, a man who rarely spoke to the press, and when all is said and done, the smartest and most emotionally eloquent artist of his era.

Twombly’s work is a celebration of spontaneity, creativity, and boldness of style that isn’t concerned with right or wrong, good or bad.  Art (and fashion) can remove limitations. Art can make you feel gay, daring, more like yourself.  Only happier.

Living in Italy, Twombly met Tatiana Franchetti, a pretty Italian aristocrat. They married in NYC, in 1959, but lived in Rome. But, at the same time, Twombly began a relationship with Nicola Del Roscio who remained his assistant, archivist and lover for more 50 years. Twombly kept a home and studio close to Del Roscio’s place in Gaeta, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, where he painted some of the most noted canvases.

Susan Sontag, herself a closet case, wrote famously in her Notes On Camp (1964):

“Many things in the world have not been named, and many things, even if they have been named, have never been described.”

When Twombly’s obits were written, even the one in the NY Times, his relationships with Rauschenberg and Del Roscio were not mentioned, although they somehow found a way to include his wife, who died the year before, and mention of their children and grandchildren. But, last year, a NY Times’ T Magazine had a terrific and colorful feature on Del Roscio with many telling details of their life together, plus wonderful photographs of their two homes in Italy.

Twombly:

“I have my pace and way of living, and I’m not looking for something. Artistic is something I don’t think about. If it happens, it happens, but don’t bother me with it. I couldn’t care less.”

SNL’s Tribute to Prince Had Some Fans Thrilled & Others Pissed Off…

snlSNL‘s Prince tribute show that aired instead of a rerun Saturday Night has gotten mixed reviews. Fans are complaining on social media (what’s new?) about the second half of this week’s broadcast, which was a compilation of vintage sketches built around The Prince Show, with former cast member Fred Armisen impersonating the pop star. The show started off with an intro from an emotional Jimmy Fallon.

Included was a bootleg of an invitation-only jam (below) that Prince did for SNL’s 40th anniversary show, with former cast members Fallon and Maya Rudolph, among others, joining onstage for Let’s Go Crazy at the after-party at the Plaza Hotel.

NBC turned to its vault of sketches later in the show that spoofed the musician — to the dismay of many fans. Armisen doing his doe-eyed Prince impersonation, opposite Maya Rudolph as Beyonce and, in one bit, Shia LaBeouf as Tobey Maguire (see below) had some seeing red, not purple.

He told TheWrap the day after the show,

I have never stopped loving Prince. “I’m so grateful for that moment. I can’t believe I was in the same room as him.

You can’t please everybody. Here are two of the amazing performances, plus one of the said sketches. Did the spoof’s bother you? (Apparently, Prince himself liked them at the time.) Watch & tell us what you think on Facebook.
