Anne Ishii & Graham Kolbeins

Anne Ishii & Graham Kolbeins

Our friends and artists Graham Kolbeins and Anne Ishii are looking for help in funding The Queer Japan Project which is a multimedia documentary with interviews from personalities “across the spectrum of gender and sexuality in Japan.

From the duo’s Kickstarter:

So far, director Graham Kolbeins and co-writer Anne Ishii (who are also collaborators at MASSIVE GOODS) have shot one week of interviews in Tokyo with artists like gay manga master Gengoroh Tagame, drag queen and renaissance woman Vivienne Sato, and controversial manko [pussy] artist Rokudenashiko. We also sat down with groundbreaking HIV activist, writer, and magazine editor Hiroshi Hasegawa, visual artist Nogi Sumiko, dancerAtsushi Matsuda of the renowned butoh group DAIRAKUDAKAN, and bar owner Masaki C. Matsumoto.

Now, we’re raising funds for a five month shoot (from April to August 2016) in locations across Japan. We’ll follow up with our existing subjects while expanding the scope of The Queer Japan Project to tell even more stories of LGBTQ+ (and beyond) people in Japan. The project will manifest over multiple media including online videos, gallery exhibitions, and a book of photography with extended interviews. The main component of the project is the feature-length documentary Queer Japan, which will be submitted to 2017 film festivals in Japan, the United States, and around the world.

Sounds awesome to me. Find out in more detail what your money will go towards on the Kickstarter page and DONATE!

March 9: It’s YOUR Birthday, Bitch!

March 9, 1902Will Geer

Want to really freak-out those Conservative Christians? Let them in on a little secret: Grandpa Walton was a queer and a Socialist. There was some gay stuff happening on Walton Mountain, for certain. I bet this will make Kim Davis’ brain fry.

Geer made a significant impact on the world of American Theater, but he will be known forever as Zebulon Walton. Geer’s acting career lasted for six decades. He began performing in tent shows and on river boats, but it eventually included Broadway plays, films, television appearances, roles in Shakespearean plays, and notable portrayals of Robert Frost, Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. He received a Tony Award nomination for his leading role in the musical for 110 In The Shade.

Geer was an arresting figure at 6’ 2’’ and 230 pounds. He labeled himself as a “folklorist”, stating

“I can’t vouch for every last picayunish detail of my stories; but they’re mostly true. Mostly.”

He was also a lifelong political radical:

“A rebel is just against things for rebellions sake. I’m a radical. Someone who goes to the roots, which is the Latin derivation of radical.”

The first lady of American Theatre, Helen Hayes, described him as “the world’s oldest hippie”. He was a friend of folk music legend Woody Guthrie. Along with Burl Ives, they toured the country during the Depression singing mostly at government work camps.

His diverse film credits include: Comanche Territory (1950), Winchester 73 (1950), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), The Reivers (1969), Seconds (1966) with Rock Hudson, and In Cold Blood (1966).  Before The Waltons (1971-1981), Geer  appeared on television with guest spots on shows like Mannix, Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, Hawaii 5-0, and as a regular on The Young Rebels (1970-72). He usually played crusty but kindly men, roles that reflected his own life.

Geer combined his passions for theatre and horticulture by forming a most unusual venue on the grounds at his rustic home in Topanga Canyon. He named it The Theatricum Botanicum. He held workshops for young actors and presented outdoor productions of Shakespeare. I once attended a magical production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with Geer as Oberon, at twilight on the summer solstice, lit by candle light under the eucalyptus and oak trees.

In the early 1950s, Geer was blacklisted for refusing to testify before the House Committee On Un-American Activities. Geer found it difficult to get work, but he did make Salt Of The Earth (1953) which was produced, directed, written, and starred other blacklisted Hollywood figures and told the story of a miners’ strike in New Mexico from a pro-union standpoint. The film was denounced by the United States House Of Representatives, and the FBI investigated the film’s financing.

He was married from 1932-1952 to Herta Ware, a fellow actor and Socialist. They had three children, but eventually divorced. Geer enjoyed a longtime romance with noted Gay Rights pioneer Harry Hay. Hay was the founder of one the first Gay Rights organizations, The  Mattachine Society in 1950. Hay also cofounded another kind of group, a brotherhood built around the idea of a spiritual tribe of gay men called The Radical Faeries. Geer and Hay were bound together by leftist politics and by their monthly all-male parties at his beach house in Solana Beach near San Diego.

Ironically, I met him after that production of that Shakespeare play about fairies in June 1974. In the moonlight, we sat in a circle with a few other gay men and passed around a joint. He put his hand on my thigh and I sighed. Grandpa Walton was groping me!

Geer left this world soon after, taking that final curtain call in 1978. The death of his character was written into The Waltons script.

Geer’s ashes are buried at his Theatricum Botanicum. The theatre and garden are open to the public and offers classes to actors of all ages and presents live music concerts including an annual tribute to the songs of Pete Seeger. The 2016 event is this Saturday.

Sister Lana Wachowski at the ‘Jupiter Ascending’ premiere in L.A.. Photo, Pacific Coast News

Yesterday, the filmmaker formerly known as Andy Wachowski came out as transgender in an essay published by The Windy City Times. Wachowski, who now goes by the name Lilly, explained that she was issuing the statement after several news organizations threatened to out her. Wachowski’s sister and filmmaking collaborator, Lana, came out as transgender in 2012. Wachowski writes.

The ‘news’ has almost come out a couple of times. Each was preceded by an ominous email from my agent –reporters have been asking for statements regarding the ‘Andy Wachowski gender transition’ story they were about to publish. In response to this threatened public outing against my will, I had a prepared a statement that was one part piss, one part vinegar and 12 parts gasoline.

Wachowski revealed that a Daily Mail reporter appeared at her door on Monday night, however—an unexpected visit that forced her hand.

I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly. You know, when you’re living as an out transgender person it’s. . .kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted—needed some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable.

The filmmaker’s full statement is below;

SEX CHANGE SHOCKER — WACHOWSKI BROTHERS NOW SISTERS!!!

There’s the headline I’ve been waiting for this past year. Up until now with dread and/or eye rolling exasperation. The “news” has almost come out a couple of times. Each was preceded by an ominous email from my agent—reporters have been asking for statements regarding the “Andy Wachowski gender transition” story they were about to publish. In response to this threatened public outing against my will, I had a prepared a statement that was one part piss, one part vinegar and 12 parts gasoline.

It had a lot of politically relevant insights regarding the dangers of outing trans people, and the statistical horrors of transgender suicide and murder rates. Not to mention a slightly sarcastic wrap-up that “revealed” my father had injected praying mantis blood into his paternal ball-sac before conceiving each of his children to produce a brood of super women, hellbent on female domination. Okay, mega sarcastic.

But it didn’t happen. The editors of these publications didn’t print a story that was only salacious in substance and could possibly have a potentially fatal effect. And being the optimist that I am, I was happy to chalk it up to progress.

Then last night while getting ready to go out for dinner my doorbell rang. Standing on my front porch was a man I did not recognize.

“This might be a little awkward,” he said in an English accent.

I remember sighing.

Sometimes it’s really tough work to be an optimist.

He proceeded to explain he was a journalist from the Daily Mail, which was the largest news service in the UK and was most definitely not a tabloid. And that I really had to sit down with him tomorrow or the next day or next week so that I could have my picture taken and tell my story which was so inspirational! And that I really didn’t want to have someone from the National Enquirer following me around, did I? BTW—The Daily Mail is so definitely not a tabloid.

My sister Lana and I have largely avoided the press. I find talking about my art frustratingly tedious and talking about myself a wholly mortifying experience. I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly. You know, when you’re living as an out transgender person it’s … kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted—needed some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable.

But apparently I don’t get to decide this.

After he had given me his card, and I closed the door it began to dawn on me where I had heard of the Daily Mail. It was the “news” organization that had played a huge part in the national public outing of Lucy Meadows, an elementary school teacher and trans woman in the UK. An editorial in the “not-a-tabloid” demonized her as a damaging influence on the children’s delicate innocence and summarized “he’s not only trapped in the wrong body, he’s in the wrong job.” The reason I knew about her wasn’t because she was transgender it was because three months after the Daily Mail article came out, Lucy committed suicide.

And now here they were, at my front door, almost as if to say—

“There’s another one! Let’s drag ’em out in the open so we can all have a look!”

Being transgender is not easy. We live in a majority-enforced gender binary world. This means when you’re transgender you have to face the hard reality of living the rest of your life in a world that is openly hostile to you.

I am one of the lucky ones. Having the support of my family and the means to afford doctors and therapists has given me the chance to actually survive this process. Transgender people without support, means and privilege do not have this luxury. And many do not survive. In 2015, the transgender murder rate hit an all-time high in this country. A horrifying disproportionate number of the victims were trans women of color. These are only the recorded homicides so, since trans people do not all fit in the tidy gender binary statistics of murder rates, it means the actual numbers are higher.

And though we have come a long way since Silence of the Lambs, we continue to be demonized and vilified in the media where attack ads portray us as potential predators to keep us from even using the goddamn bathroom. The so-called bathroom bills that are popping up all over this country do not keep children safe, they force trans people into using bathrooms where they can be beaten and or murdered. We are not predators, we are prey.

So yeah, I’m transgender.

And yeah, I’ve transitioned.

I’m out to my friends and family. Most people at work know too. Everyone is cool with it. Yes, thanks to my fabulous sister they’ve done it before, but also because they’re fantastic people. Without the love and support of my wife and friends and family I would not be where I am today.

But these words, “transgender” and “transitioned” are hard for me because they both have lost their complexity in their assimilation into the mainstream. There is a lack of nuance of time and space. To be transgender is something largely understood as existing within the dogmatic terminus of male or female. And to “transition” imparts a sense of immediacy, a before and after from one terminus to another. But the reality, my reality is that I’ve been transitioning and will continue to transition all of my life, through the infinite that exists between male and female as it does in the infinite between the binary of zero and one. We need to elevate the dialogue beyond the simplicity of binary. Binary is a false idol.

Now, gender theory and queer theory hurt my tiny brain. The combinations of words, like freeform jazz, clang disjointed and discordant in my ears. I long for understanding of queer and gender theory but it’s a struggle as is the struggle for understanding of my own identity. I have a quote in my office though by José Muñoz given to me by a good friend. I stare at it in contemplation sometimes trying to decipher its meaning but the last sentence resonates:

“Queerness is essentially about the rejection of a here and now and an insistence on potentiality for another world.”

So I will continue to be an optimist adding my shoulder to the Sisyphean struggle of progress and in my very being, be an example of the potentiality of another world.

Darlin’ I love ya, but give me Park Avenue!

Dressed in overalls and a straw hat, Donald Trump sang this version of the Green Acres theme song he sang with Megan Mullally at the 2011 Emmy Awards. He was pretty much on key too. I’ll bet Megan feels differently about this today than she did 5 years ago. Kinda like an innocent, fun song vs. a duet with Hitler. Watch.

George Martin, the producer who more than anyone defined the sound of the Beatles, has died. His death was confirmed by Ringo Starr in a Tweet early this morning.

God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family. George will be missed.

Ringo followed that along with a photo of Martin hanging out with the Fab Four, saying,

Thank you for all your love and kindness George peace and love.

Paul McCartney spoke of his sadness to hear the news of Martin’s passing in a post on his website.

I have so many wonderful memories of this great man that will be with me forever. He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me. He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George.

Martin earned the title of the “fifth Beatle” after signing the band to their first record contract in 1962 and working with them through the iconic album Abbey Road. British Prime Minister David Cameron also tweeted about the producer’s death.

Sir George Martin was a giant of music. Working with the Fab Four to create the world’s most enduring pop music.

George Martin was 90.

StacyLayneMatthews-DragCon2016

Stacey Lane Matthews, who appeared on Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is a country girl carving herself a pathway through every concrete jungle she comes across. Originally from Backswamp, North Carolina (Yes, this is a real place!), she has been winning over people from an early age. She was even voted Prom King at her high school! Her time on Drag Race is remembered most for big, bold, beautiful look and matching personality. She is also equally well known for coining the notoriously quotable word, “Henny,” which has since caught on as a fan favorite. Along with being force of nature herself, she is fascinated by tornadoes and enjoys watching the “Chucky” movies. Just hope she doesn’t get caught up in a midnight storm that knocks the power out while she’s watching a horror film, because, believe it or not, she is afraid of the dark!

An absolute masterpiece. It’s a meta-mashup of popular film characters – Baby Groot, Blade, Tony Montana, Tony Manero, Luke Skywalker, Pee-Wee Herman, Forrest Gump, Axel Foley, three or four James Bonds, Robocop and ON and ON and ON – HUNDREDS of them – who meet on the dance floor in a single scene. It’s beyond mesmerizing. Beyond next level. And that’s BEFORE the aliens arrive to destroy everyone. Do yourself a favor, press play and sink into the madness.

There is a place where all fictional characters meet… Outside of time, Outside of all logic, this place is known as HELL’S CLUB.

And if you still haven’t had enough, here’s ANOTHER one.

920x920-1March 10, 1931John Rechy:

“Gay men should not adopt the sophomoric model of heterosexual dating; gay men should always have sex first.”

In those crazy 1980s, even after I had achieved a degree of success on some of Seattle’s stages, with a great role in a long-running play, and collecting residuals for a national commercial, an international commercial and a national voice-over, I still would not give up my “day job” working in a restaurant. When John Rechy published his first novel, City Of Night, in 1963, he was still earning his living as a prostitute on the mean streets of LA. I suppose he didn’t expect a book that dealt with underground gay life in America to make much money, & it would be foolish to give up the day job, or in Rechy’s case, the night job, just because you got published. I understand.

Nervously purchased at a used bookstore in 1968, City Of Night was my first gay book and I hid my worn paperback edition for years. In 2009, I read his very funny and crazy memoir, About My Life And the Kept Woman, where Rechy writes how by day, he was a successful bestselling writer and a college professor, but by night, he was back on the streets, selling sex to men. Rechy:

“I wanted demarcation between the different areas of my life & I fooled myself that I could keep them separate. I wanted to be treated one way as ‘the writer’, another way as ‘the hustler’, & if they crossed over I got very confused.”

Rechy was raised in El Paso, the son of Mexican immigrants. City Of Night put him on the literary culture map. Jim Morrison references it in his song L.A. Woman. Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, and James Baldwin were all big fans. Artist David Hockney and filmmaker Gus Van Sant have proclaimed Rechy as a major influence.

Famous gay writer Christopher Isherwood once invited Rechy home to talk about writing, but then had his way with Rechy, so did Liberace and George Cukor. Rechy remained confused.

In an era with rampant homophobia his books met with frequent denunciations. The New York Review Of Books panned City Of Night using the headline: Fruit Salad.

Rechy kept writing books though, publishing works in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, detailing the ups and mostly downs of his compulsive sex life: Numbers (1967), Rushes (1979), and The Sexual Outlaw (1977). I have read them all. He taught Creative Writing at UCLA and Occidental College, plus he conducted regular writing workshops, with alumni that includes Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Cunningham. Rechy:

“It’s a strange thing that happens when one book comes and takes over. I’ve written 16 books, and the one that continues to be known is the first one.”

Rechy survived his time on the streets, survived his drug problems in the 1970s, survived the plague that killed most of his friends in the 1980s and 1990s, plus he managed to author 15 books. Gore Vidal:

“Rechy is one of the few original American writers of the last century”.

Rechy didn’t change his hustling business right away after his success as a writer:

“The last time I hustled was when I was 55 years old. It was more of a symbolic act than anything, just to prove to myself that I could still do it. I actually gave the guy his money back, much to his astonishment. I didn’t put that story in the book. There’s a limit to how far you can stretch people’s belief.”

Rechy and film producer Michael Ewing his partner of 40 years, now his Husband, are busy living happily ever after in their stylish house in the Hollywood Hills. Rechy:

“I never believed that this could happen to me. Back in the 1970s, when I was having a bad time with drugs and cruising, my friends all thought I’d end up committing suicide, and I thought they were right. But things changed, and that’s all due to Michael.”

Rechy celebrates his 85th birthday on this very day, March 10th, and he still looks very rent-able. His decay from ageing is modest. He wears glasses now, but he has a full head of hair and his pecs and guns are still impressive after daily workouts in his home gym. His still speaks out on his own website and he is working on a new book:

“The novel I’m writing now is a mixture of everything I’ve done before; mystery, horror, romance, everything and anything. I even proclaim comics as a major influence.”

“The autobiographer is the biggest liar for claiming: This is exactly how it happened. The biographer is the next level down for arguing: I am capable of knowing another’s life. The most honest writer is the novelist, who says: This is a lie, a fiction, but I’m going to try like hell to make you believe it’s true.”

Out ex-football star, Esera Tuaolo

At LAX yesterday, Carson Kressley was confronted by a TMZ paparazzo’s question. By responding, he revealed that he once dated an NFL defensive tackle. The clueless camerawoman asked,

What do you think about this idea that gay men can’t play football…?

To which Kressley replied,

I once went out with a football player who was actually in the Super Bowl. So there.

Kressley then said he’s still very good friends with Esera Tuaolo, who publicly came out in 2002 after he retired. The RuPaul’s Drag Race judge and current Celebrity Apprentice star powered through an even more offensive line of questioning. The TMZ woman asked,

There’s this idea that maybe they’re only good at cleaning and cooking…

To which Kressley came back with,

…and doing hair, and arranging flowers!

He saith that he thought that Tuaolo was a better football player than a star at any domestic tasks, Kressley added,

But he’s awfully nice and can sing and do other things!

A gentleman, is always a gentleman, even when asked probing, tacky questions. Watch.
