I must have watched this video a hundred times, and every time I gasp and clutch my chest. How is this witchcraft possible? Australian company Showpo shows off the crazy new color-changing fabric technology, below. “This is going to be next level,” says CEO Jane Lu on FacebookLive, as she instructs a coworker to use his iPad with a color wheel on it to manipulate the color of the dress the model is wearing on-screen. Everybody proceeds to FREAK. THE. FUCK. OUT.
You will, too.
Showpo rep Kelly Mccarran spoke to Finder.com.au, and explained the dress is made from a “special fabric that can reflect different light frequencies” and is linked to a device that can alter which frequency (and therefore which color) the light reflects.
Watch it below, and imagine the possibilities. (A hot pink suit to enter the party… changing to purple polka dots half-way through… and then leaving in a swirl of turquoise and yellow! I CAN’T WAIT!)
Of course, cynics in the BuzzFeed comment section accuse Showpo of using a green dress against a green-screen background and manipulating the color in post. Others compared it to Princess Aurora’s dress at Disney World, which turned out to be fake. (“It looked very similar to this, including the transition. Did you notice his hand already went for the pink on the color wheel before she said it and while she was looking at the camera? Seems rehearsed. Their reactions are way over the top too. Looks like they’re trying to make a viral video to increase brand awareness and it’s working.”)
