The Supreme Court just agreed today to resolve the debate over marriage equality and will consider four cases from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, consolidated. They will hear 2 1/2 hours of oral arguments in April and issue a ruling before the current term ends in late June. In 2013 — United States v. Windsor, forced the U.S. government to recognize gay marriages, and Hollingsworth v. Perry, which made California the 13th state to allow them. Those rulings, however historic, didn’t resolve the the national debate;
Whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry, or whether states have the right to ban the practice.
Gays and lesbians can now marry in 36 states, most recently including Florida, it is banned in the four states the Supreme Court cases are from; Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, along with 10 other states. Really, let’s hope and pray this going to happen, kids – just in time for Summer weddings and Gay Pride! (via USA Today)
